Laptop RAM

Hello Community,

 

So I have been thinking of upgrading my RAM for my Acer Aspire A515 for quite some time as some of the stuff I have been doing at school is getting choked from my 8GB of memory. The current config of the laptop has 4GB soldered to the motherboard with the other 4GB being user-upgradeable, running in dual channel. If I were to switch out the user upgradeable 4GB of memory for a 16GB RAM stick, would the now 20GB still run in dual channel mode?

No, it will not run in dual channel mode, and I don't think the motherboard will accept a 16GB DIMM honestly.

I know that it does support a 16GB DIMM Stick, I've seen it done many times before and also been stated with the Crucial scanner so yea.

 

I was only wondering since the other half is soldered to the board

you can because modern CPUs (Intel ones for sure) flex mode, which puts 4GB from each stick to run dual channel, while the rest does single channel.
