Right now, I'm using a table with holes everywhere, and uneven surface and it's not big enough. So I need to upgrade.

I want one of the L shaped desks, around 150cm x 200cm x 80cm the hight isn't too important, and a decent look (Glass or high quality wood), it's also gotta be strong, if it's wood - which it most likely will be - I want to be able to keep my rig there.

Price is important, I don't want to spend huge amounts or money on a desk.

Build your own. I made my own with 2x4's for the legs and 1'' plywood (not particle board) for the top. Threw a couple coats of stain on it, looks really nice.

Total cost about $100 even for the materials and the stain and about 2 hours of my time (letting stain dry and the re-applying mostly)

>Went to home depot

>picked out materials

>home depoot employee cut everything to spec for me

>payed for the shit and threw it in my car

>stained everything

>screwed shit together

>done

Was thinking of doing something like this, may end up as well - DIY can be pretty rewarding, and I'm in the midst of modding my case a bit

I can recommend Gallant series from Ikea as I own several of them for my lan room. They come in different sizes/colors, glass/wood, height adjustable and can be joined together if you need a larger surface later on.

With desks, you get what you pay for. that said if you do not want to do a DIY desk, then I would suggest that if you want to get a good quality desk, the price starts at $500. Ikea has pretty good desk that you can customize to your needs at around $500. Bush Furniture makes great tops for their desk with solid wood (not the best but the tops can take a beating) the legs bases for Bush furniture is just strait junk, it's made out of mashed saw dust material w/ a hard vinyl cover keeping it together (cheaply made). I have gone through alot of desks over the years and the best way to find a real wood desk, is to buy a real wood desk. They are not cheap by any means but they sure are worth every penny. After I did a bunch of research I found that the company that makes the best desk is ( National Furniture ) http://www.nationalofficefurniture.com/. National Furniture makes gorgeous desks that you can customize to your own needs. I own one of their L-shaped desks, it's called the "Zetro" . What I love about this desk is it is solid cherry Oak wood from top to bottom, the legs are made out of solid steal, best of all ( I find it a pro but some might find it a con, is the weight) My desk weights over 1200 pounds when both sections are put together which makes it virtually unstealable,

I paid $4200 for the desk, you don't have to get one that expensive, they do sale desks that are around $800-$1000 and they have similar build qualities as mine.

theres a officer furniture shop in Australia called empire i got a 2m x 1.8m corner desk with a book case for 600 and they came to my place and put it together, I recommend looking at a commercial grade stuff , it might not be as flash but it will be cheaper and stronger

Its all about those volumetric clouds

A lot of that office furniture from empire, looks like an exact replica of the Bush furniture :) at a much lower price then Bush, even the returns look exactly the same, they just don't have the Bush name on them, Good find bro :) . If on a budget of $500-$1000, Bush grade furniture is the best bet, Good quality stuff for the price.

there are alot like empire but one thing i found is that some have crap joints , plastic handles, low quality lamination. so just be aware - especially the joints

If you don't care about buying second hand then you could score a good deal like I did where I found a business selling one of their old desks but still in great condition. It's about the size that you specified with an extra removable 1.5m L-return which I can attach to either side. Mine also came with a leather writing inlay which obviously wouldn't suit everyone but I actually find it nicer to rest my wrists on rather than straight wood/veneer.

I think I got it for somewhere around $120-150 which included a drawer with a computer hole and extend-able keyboard tray not that I use that haha. Also finding one with the cable holes precut into it is the best IMO, my desk looks so neat and tidy because all the cables go straight into the holes not along and down the back of the desk. I also mounted my powerboards under the desk so now I no longer have cable spaghetti on the floor! :D

Any specific aesthetic requirements as far as colors, specialist materials ect? I should hopefully have the time tonight to work on something for you :)
Looks aren't too important, I'm sure I'll get used to it, but it has to be strong, so really wood is the best option, I like the look of Oak, so maybe that, but I might end up making one as Broseephus suggested.

  • 1 month later...

Does anyone remember what was the name or product Linus mentioned from the Steelseries special set, that had the TJ case and the Apex keyboard, and had that synthetic desk covering with the Steelseries logo on it? I am trying to find more about that desk covering, and I'm not having any luck. Anybody know?

The desk looks good, but I don't know if the features would be that necessary.
