Having very odd issues with Win10 PC

So I’m not particularly sure where to start except to describe the problem and then walk it back. I’m pretty sure I know “What” the cause is but am lost as to the “Why”. 

 

So what’s happening is every so often (I most often notice when watching a video but it has happened while browsing and gaming as well) my monitor will freeze but audio is still playing in the background for a few seconds, usually around 10-15, and then everything just locks down and becomes unusable for upwards of 5 minutes and then comes back as if nothing happened. If I then continue to try to use it the issue will pop up a total of 3 times and has increased duration in each instance, the third of which will last indefinitely (or at least 2+ hours). It is also totally random when it happens too. Sometimes it happens 5-10 minutes after boot up, sometimes after a few hours, and sometimes not for days. 

 

This all started about a month ago (beginning of December) or at least that’s when I first noticed it but I doubt it happened before thanksgiving. So that led me to believe that it possibly had something to do with Windows Update. The days leading up to the problem becoming apparent I had noticed Windows kept prompting me that Windows Update Had failed and would try again on next shutdown/restart cycle. I tried going in and manually updating and it would fail every time.

 

So that’s my current predicament and it’s already passed the point of “Fuck it” because I’ve even tried doing system restore and even went as far as a total system refresh but nothing can ever finish. Both of those options have been tried and both give an error message saying that they failed. So I’m pretty much at the try anything phase because I just want my damn computer back!!!

 

I will answer any questions to the best of my knowledge. I’m no IT pro but I’m quite comfortable with my own abilities (I better be, I built the damn thing) and they’ve gotten me by so far
