Hi,

So I have a laptop that came with win 8 pre-installed. I upgraded it to 8.1 during the free upgrade. I read in many places that a unused win 8.x and 7 key will activate windows 10. So I thought of upgrading my laptop. But I have a few questions:-

1) Will my laptop's windows 8 key count as unused as it would be used in one place only?

2) Will the OS automatically grab the key from the motherboard without me entering it? (I know that's a thing)

3) If not, then how can I get my product key as my laptop does not have a COA sticker?

Unfortunately the free upgrade period to Win10 has expired some time ago.

You will need to purchase a Windows 10 license and install the ISO for the best results.

The upgrade way is not always successful and you can lose files. I personally always do a clean install when upgrading the OS.

No. Read it up. Windows 7 and 8 keys still activate windows 10.

That article is over a year old.. you can try it but I wont grantee it will work.

Give it a try …. if it works, it works.

I do try keep up with the on goings of WIn10 as I am part of the insiders group so I get weekly'ish updates on the development and current builds. Though with my busy schedule I do try to keep my eye on the updates when I can. [not saying this to boast just to give you an idea of what I know] the registering of windows does change from time to time.
