Okay to start I've been building computer for years now but i'm stumped on this one. My friend had a IBUYPOWER PC he bought and wanted to upgrade, he didn't have enough for everything to be replaced, so we went through parts and the parts we have all together are

  • i5 - 8400 CPU
  • GTX 1050 2gb GPU
  • MSI Z370 Gaming Plus Motherboard
  • CORSAIR - VENGEANCE LPX Series 16GB (2PK 8GB) 2.4GHz DDR4 RAM
  • we had a 400W and 500W PSU
  • 1TB Western Digital HDD

Okay so everythign is hooked up correctly we had me and another buddy who knows his stuff putting it together, we go to boot it, doesn't boot with the 400W PSU, Try the 500W PSU, still doesn't boot. Now I could be wrong somehow but this system should not need more than a 500W PSU. We took my buddies old 750W PSU that smells like an electrical fire is happening inside of it and it boots up no problem. We cannot figure out why this system will not work with a 500W PSU, Judging my knowledge and using PSU calculators this system should draw less than 500 watts. if anyone has any tips or why this is happening or what we could have possibly done wrong, i'm honestly all ears. If you have any questions, please don't be afraid to ask. Thanks in advance.

Yes the system should work fine with that PSU. Maybe some cables were improperly plugged in when the other one was installed? Also make sure you turned on the other PSU

the PSUs are just bad. Get something tier C or higher. 400w will do atm

Your friend got ripped off on some upsales from iBuyPower. Whatever, that's not the point.

Does the GPU have a 6 or 8 pin power adapter that the power supply directly links to? If not it draws power strictly from the x16 PCIe slot the GPU is plugged into (75w maximum rating for those). I just want to make sure the cables from the PSU to the motherboard's 24 pin power adapter (which powers the GPU through PCIe) can safely deliver 75 watts if the GPU does not have a 6 or 8 pin adapter. Also try removing and reinstalling the GPU and go again. It's possible power delivery was not working properly if the GPU was seated poorly.
