Better way to control fans?

Hi guys,

 

I have been running into some problems for a while relating to my case fans. Since I have 2 fractal design fans (came with Fractal design define C TG case) and one BeQuiet 120mm I use speed fan to control the speeds of them (My motherboard is kinda crap to do it on its own. Fans either scream for running too fast or not spinning fast enough. Gigabyte Z77-D3H). I was playing games (for example PUBG, Forza and some others) and my speed fan program just crash (shows -1C on CPU) and all fans would start to do random things, either not spin or spin too fast (Even if the speed fan is not set to controll them! Like a gpu fan or a cpu fan).

 

I googled quite a bit about the issue and the only way is to not use the program (or use other software - mostly pay to use).

 

I was thinking of finnaly fixing the problem and sticking with some sort of a hardware or semi hardware solution that wouldnt rely on a program but I was not able to find any good ways of how to set it up or what to buy to do it.

 

Can any of you recommend a good way to fix my problem with some sort of fan controller? Also should I change my current 3pin fractal design fans?

You have 3 options I can remember. There's 4th, but its less known.

1. Argus Monitor. Paid software doing what Speedfan is doing. Also works on current gen motherboards while Speedfan isn't supported on those.
2. NZXT Grid 3 and CAM. Hardware hub with USB connection for software controls.
3. Corsair Commander Pro and Link. Another set.
4. Some hardware/software thing from some water cooling specialist comapny I can't remember. Looked like Speedfan on steroids.

I usually don't endorse Corsair stuff because of personal opinions. But in this case I'm torn. CAM as software is pretty shitty, but Commander Pro is much more expensive than Grid 3. Corsair used to have cheaper option, but they have since scrapped it to give room for RGB controls.

I'd like the idea with NZXT grid but only the device itself would cost me 50Eu or so... Also Argus Monitor is basically speed fan just better optimized currently and I wouldnt want to have problems like with speed fan... Also is it worth to change all fans to BeQuiet pure wings with PWM and try that first or I should just bite the bullet and go with smth like NZXT?

I don't think changing fans to PWM helps much. Only if all headers on your board have full PWM support. As owner of Gigabyte board, I'd say answer is no. Grid 3 does support PWM fans, if memory serves, so you can upgrade fans later.

I would suggest a fan controller hub (NZXT grid, corsair) Only problem is that you will need proprietary software like corsair icue or nzxt cam to control fans speeds. I mean it isn't as tedious as speedfan.
