Hello dear linus tech tips community,

Im in a bit of a pickle. About half a year ago I was moving countries, and therefore had to pack up my pc and ship it. Today was the first day that I tried to start using it again, but I ran into a few problems. While the pc turns on fine, all the fans are spinning, including the gpu fan, I cannot get either an HDMI or Display port signal to my monitor. I tried using both the plugs on my motherboard and my gpu, and after suspecting that it might be a bad cable i tried it with my laptop but it works fine. This has me worried that something may have gotten damaged during shipping.

Now im just trying to rule out between the cpu and gpu.

Will the computer turn on with a dead cpu? And also could my gpu be dead even though the fans are spinning?
Thanks in advance for your help! Im about to uninstall my gpu and see if I can get my system to boot without it

Re-insert ram a la Linum, comes loose in transit sometimes

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Open up the case and attempt to reseat the GPU. Check all power cables are plugged in correctly.

Reseat the RAM. If that doesn't work, pull off the cooler and check to see if any pins under the CPU are bent. Reinstall CPU & cooler and try again.

erm, I just removed my heatsink and well, heres a pic

im gonna assume that you normally shouldnt have an imprint of your cpu on ur heatsink?

That's normal from where the thermal paste is making contact between the CPU and cooler. Just a normal discoloration that happens on some metals.

Since you've removed it and it hasn't been in use for an extended period of time, clean off the thermal paste on the CPU/cooler and apply new paste.

Go through and unplug everything and plug it back in. Something may have come loose during transit.

Erm, when I removed my cpu i accidentaly got some thermal paste on the back of the cpu,the little golden thingies, and wiped it off, but u can still see some discoloration. in the pic its in the top-middle of the cpu

should i use some alcohol to clean it or would that possibly break my cpu?

Isopropyl alcohol + paper towel. Gently wipe & allow to dry before reinstalling. Won't hurt the CPU.

is there any alternative to isopropyl alcohol? since I do not have it at hand, and it would be great if I could resolve my pc issue today
