How to record on PS3?

Does anybody know how to do it? Do I need some 3rd party device like elgato or catpure card?

Use remote play on Windows and capture that, use LAN on both the PC and PS3 though or you'll have pretty bad framedrops.

Not sure, worst case if it doesn't work just emulate or dual-boot Win7

So the only way to record on PS3 is by hooking up a cable to your PC?

It's not really hooking upto the PC, moreso just streaming what's on your TV across the network. But yeah pretty much.

 

A cheap chinese version of an elgato would be a good idea, just make sure it's 720p because upscaling looks terrible on the PS3

Hm, well, is there other way to do it without needing the PC and such.

Not really, you'd need something to capture the output from the PS3 and store that somewhere.

 

What the capture card does, is it basically takes the video and audio from your PS3 and pipes it into a PC to be recorded and stored.

Looks like my PS3 is not close to my PC for the appropriate cable length

Like I said, for an optimal connection they should be connected to your Router via LAN. 

You could get away with just the PS3 on LAN if your PC uses AC/5ghz WiFi

50ft of LAN is $17 on Amazon, cheaper if you can source it locally or on eBay

 

I have 3 runs of this exact cable in my apartment. I have 1.5Gbps down and 1Gbps up but the fibe modem is in a really awkward place in my unit.

If you want to do it right, you want to get a capture card. Remote Play certainly is an option but it is less than ideal.

 

Just get a Roxio, Elgato, or some comparable capture device. Sorry, I can't recommend a model as I'm a bit out of the loop with current models. If you want to keep things cheap you could probably just pick up an older model that only captures at 30 FPS.

 

Note that the PS3 has HDCP protection not just for video content but for games as well. You cannot just hook up a capture device. You will need to buy a device that will remove this protection. The PS3 does not have a way to turn it off through software like the PS4 does. These devices can be head in the form of HDMI splitters which you will probably want anyway. I'd link you to the one I bought several years ago for PS3 capture but since it is stripping out he copy protection, I'm not sure if we are allowed to link to such devices.

 

You mentioned your PC is good distance from you PS3 so just buy a nice long HDMI cable. You can use something like TeamViewer to control the software on the PC without having to be near it. That's what I did and it worked great.
