Hi all, I came here because I have been binging on Linus's videos trying to learn as much as I can about PC building. I gravitated here because like Linus as I am a fellow Canuck from BC too and I like how he explains things.

So after some time I think I am educated enough to build my own machine, and I am no stranger to working on computers/delicate electronics.

I was hoping those with more experience could look at my proposed system that I will likely start buying parts on boxing day since there are sales locally and online I am hoping to capitalize on. This is what I am proposing:

  1. Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor - picked it for its cores vs. threads and ability to overclock if I get the nerve up over the i7-9700
  2. MSI - Z370 GAMING M5 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard - Had good reviews and can take an i9 for future upgrading.
  3. Corsair - H150i PRO AIO cooler - in case I go i9 down the road.
  4. G.Skill - Trident Z 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory - good reviews and gets me half the ram I can max out on, letting me upgrade down the road in paired ram.
  5. Samsung - 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive - I have 250 gb ssd right now and run out of space all the time, so I decided go with 1 TB and never have to worry, and future proof as I assume programs will continue to grow in file sizes.
  6. Western Digital - Black 4 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive - Not willing to drop tons of money on a second ssd, so this seems like a good compromise since no applications, only files, music, movies will go here.
  7. EVGA - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11 GB FTW3 GAMING iCX Video Card - No point in going any bigger than this, no games I am interested in with Ray-tracing. I want a 1080Ti, for the 11 GB ram, I don't really care who makes it so long as its quality.
  8. Phanteks - Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower Case - Large, good reviews and it has filters to help with dust. I am not interested in pimping out the case, LEDS etc, I want performance, not looks.
  9. EVGA - SuperNOVA G3 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply - Good reviews, should be fine for future upgrades?

Alternative choices I am considering, should I swap the:

SDD for a Western Digital - Blue 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive

HD for a Seagate - BarraCuda 4 TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive

As far as the build plan thread recommendations:

1. Budget and Location: I am located in BC, Canada, and will purchase most of my parts online, likely Newegg.ca. I have no real price limit so to speak but want to keep it around $3000-$3500 CAD

2. Aim: System will be used for a mix of gaming (minecraft w/shaders, COD, Fallout, Star Wars Battlefronts, wolfenstein: The New Order, etc), CAD design (Fusion360), Video Editing (Sony Vegas Movie Studio)

3. Monitors: I run three monitors, two 22 inch, one 32 inch. Planning on getting two more 32." Resolution is not a big concern, I am not all that concerned about having the most fancy of monitors and gaming in 4k etc.

4. I have a gaming mouse and keyboard already. Going to purchase a retail, full version of MS Windows 10 Home

5. Upgrading because my current machine I feel is not worth upgrading, mostly because it won't take much for a video card, and I don't want to pay for a new power supply to boot.

Build looks fine

you might be able to get slightly cheaper ram that doesnt have rgb

you might want to consider getting your 1080ti used since they are kinda expensive to buy new now

put this list into pc partpicker and order from there since it will give you the cheapest prices for the item that you want

Get a better power supply. The supernova g3 has issues don't make it a great choice. The g2 is a better choice.

You might have trouble finding a 1080Ti so if you can't get a hold of one, a 2080 performs about the same for gaming and can do some more work based tasks because of the tensor cores (something the 10 series GTX cards don't have).

The Samsung - 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive if I'm looking at the correct one has speeds of 3400MB/s / 2500MB/s whereas the WD Blue drive is only 560MB/s / 530MB/s

I'm not sure how well that translates to real world performance. But I think it would be worth investigating. I know I want to go one of the Samsungs in my new computer when I get there.

Thanks for the information, I believe I picked the TrindentZ because it was cheaper than the RGB ram I initially was looking at. Thanks for the tip on part picker I looked into that, looks useful. I am not looking to buy used, so if I can't get a 1080 Ti new then I guess its a 2080

Thanks for the reply, I will defently look at the two power supplys, is there something better than a g3 or g2 I should look at?

Thanks for the reply, I after looking into those speeds which I did not consider, I think the 970 is worth the extra money.

There is better than the g2, but those are pretty overkill for what most people are doing, so a 650w and up with the g2 is fine.

Heres the Power Supply tier list. I recommend, for your build, anything in Tier A and Tier S, with Tier B at the absolute least.
