Me neighbour has told me that his old company is shutting down and that he will be able to salvage a lot of the old computers that the company had. He is able to get about 18 HP desktops which the company had installed in 2007 and he wanted to take one for himself (as long as it is fast enough for his use) but I can do with the rest what I want. I was thinking of maybe setting up a Home NAS as the drives installed in the computers were likely large drives for business use, and aside from maybe keeping a few parts here and there, we'll probably sell the rest.

He has also told me that he will be able to get his hands on maybe a dozen blade servers which cost the company about £5000 each to buy when new and still likely has a bit of value to them. I was wondering if there are any other ideas you had, anything I could do better with the computers and if I should sell all the blade servers or if I should maybe put a few to use (though my internet at the moment is pretty poor so I wouldn't expect to be able to do any server hosting) Also is there anything I should tell him to look out for and to grab hold of when he's cleaning out the place, anything of value or importance which would be found in a medium-large sized business?

Unless the guy is the owner of the company I wouldn't take anything more than you want to be held liable for.

Good luck.

Na it's fine, it's either going to him or the company said they'd scrap it. They're a multi-million pound cooperation and have no need for the old technologies.

Great idea but imagine how much the electricity would cost. And the space you would need. Even if you had a spare room, that's enough computers to heat up your entire house like a sauna.

Donate to the LTT Folding team? :) Honestly though, as it sounds as though you are across the pond, depending on shipping, if you are willing to donate the Blade servers, I can put them to use Folding for the LTT Team and could cover the cost of shipping if nto to outrageous.

Depending on the quality of the blades as well as your skills, you could look at your own hosting company. The start up cost would be $1-$2k however after a while you would certainly make your money back. I'd send them all to a data center in the internet lane of Virginia or whatever the UK equivalent is and then virtualize the servers with say 2 or 4 cores with 2gb, 4gb or 8gb and a decent amount of hard drive space. A lot of gaming communities are looking for things like this to use as hosts and a 2GB dual core on a 100mbit line will go for about $30 a month and I've seen quad cores with 8 or 16 GB go for $100+ a month.

Otherwise if that seems like too much work, I may be able to take some of them off your hands for you for a decent price including shipping.

I don't advise to run all of them, unless you get free electriccity and have a really good AC system in your house. Maybe keep 2 or 3 and use one as a NAS.

Keep one to torrent from and do other stuff like that. And keep one as a backup.

Take out the RAM and HDDs out of the others. Keep the drives for a NAS, and keep some RAM as a backup, but sell most of it. I'm guessing it is DDR2.

CPUs/Mobos: Depends on what they are, if they are old....I would scrap them or practice delidding the CPUs :D. If you do scrap them, take them to a electronic recycling place so they are dealt with properly.

CPU: AMD 3950x Mobo: MSI B550 RAM: 32GB DDR4 GPU: Asus 3080 Strix PSU: Superflower Leadex 3 720w Case: BeQuiet 500DX

Storage: 2TB SSD + 4TB HDD Audio: SMSL 793ii -> HiFiman HE-400 + Mission MS-50 Speakers

You could also make a little money from recycling the metals too depending on how much ally, gold and copper there is.

I will definitely see if I can set one or more up aside for the LTT Folding team. If I do , I will contact you back and you can tell me what to do and how to set it up :)

I would definitely like to set up some kind of server, though at the moment my internet is really bad, but after I sell a few of them, maybe then I'll be able to afford better internet. I'll see, there's no absolute if I can get them all yet, and as I'm working with my neighbour, he will likely get a percentage of the profits.

Just remember, with Blades you need a chassis for them to work - and most of the Blade chassis run on 30A or 3 phase. 30A isn't to common in a house, other then for a stove and 3 phase... no. :)

I have two 30A circuits in my crawl space. :D

But yes, if you can get some setup, I can definitely help - pretty easy to get going.
