The i7 8700 is very capable, it'll only ever be an issue with a 2080 Ti ~ RTX TITAN if you want to play at 1080p240hz as it'll lack that last bit of single thread performance due to lower all cores boost of 4.3ghz at stock.

I get higher CPU Queen bench result then a stock 8700k lol.  So you better OC that 8700k to 4.8 to 5Ghz and what not.

With a i7 8086k(binned 8700k) with a RTX 2080 ti the GPU bottlenecks 90% of the time. Since this occurs above the refresh rate of my monitor it is fine. For 4k gaming, GPU and CPU are overclocked by necessity to deal with poorly optimized open world games.

It is the same with my i7 8700k with a single GTX 1080 ti at 3440X1440 resolution.

A bigger bottleneck on booth systems is i/o. Both systems use SATA SSDs with no other drives. 95% of the time they are fine. On poorly optimized open world games and modded open world games they are too slow. I will be replacing them with Samsung 970 EVOs in the new year.
