First time M.2 User....

Johanes

So i just ordered a [Western Digital WD Blue 3D NAND 500GB PC SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s M.2 2280 Solid State Drive - WDS500G2B0B]

this will be my first time using an M.2... Is there any special steps i have to do so i can use this thing properly?? or is it as easy as remove boot drive>install M.2>select M.2 for format and install win 10?

yes (no special requirements), just unscrew the m.2 drive, put the m.2 drive in, put the screw in, and you are done as it is now a drive that you can use : )

@Johanes You wouldn't neccessarily need to remove the current boot drive, just manually select the install media from UEFI or on some UEFIs by pressing F8 key.

Don't look for the M.2 screw in the packaging of your new SSD, it comes with a motherboard :)

@Giiman95 Reason for why im removing the boot drive is because ive been  experiencing some failures on the drive(and ive done all the usual checks to see if the drive is dying)... Im just removing it so that just in case i dont get some weird stuff happening when i first boot on a fresh win10...

@redteam4ever yeah ive built this system myself and ive been slowly adding and upgrading stuff onto it... and that M.2 screw has been tempting me for the past year now... XD

I know what you mean. I just built my new Ryzen system and as soon as I set out to build it, I ran to Best Buy to buy a Samsung 970 evo. So nice not having to take up any more SATA ports or run more wires in my case.

Just know that since you have a SATA III M.2 drive (NVMe is different) this will likely disable one of your main SATA ports on your board.  So you don't look to troubleshoot that problem should you add more drives.  Your manual will tell you which ports get shut off to use the SATA M.2

^^^ Be aware if you can't see it in the BIOS or OS off the old drive, some mobos just disable the M.2 ports by default so no need to freak out. Should be simple to just enable it in the BIOS.

An M.2 drives are really nice to have in our system as they doesn't require the drive cage/brackets and tidy up your PC interior because no more extra cables takes the space and to manage..

Sorry for going off topic, but I would be worried about that EPS cable running right over the socket and VRM area - it's one of the hottest places on the motherboard and I would definitely look for a datasheet (or general info) on those cables just to make sure that they can handle the temperature. Standard PVC insulated cables are usually rated for maximum temperature in 70-105°C range (I doubt that I would find the exact figure, there are so many manufacturers) so I wouldn't put them that close - I don't know about those braided ones, so feel free to educate me.

This is new for me, I haven't consider the risk of routing cables like this before.. I just took this pic from pinterest.
