Who did you build a computer for this holiday season?

corrado33

Anyone building a system for someone else this holiday season?

Just finished picking up a case and storage for a computer for my family back home. (Some crazy sales going on right now... 256 gb nvme for $50 and 4tb wd blue for $100. It consists mainly of my old parts and a few I picked up for super cheap on my local craigslist ads. (Memory, unfortunately, had to be purchased new.) Super excited to give it to them as they've really only ever owned pre-owned dell laptops.

I plan on setting up a shared network drive to the 4tb of storage and setting up a vpn so that they can access it anywhere with their laptop (both are teachers.)

Sounds like a good plan lol. If you don't mind me asking, how cheap is dirt cheap? I'm thinking of getting a 1080 or similar card from the US since UK 1080s aren't amazing deals

220? That's the going price for a nice 970 over here. I doubt I'll be able to find that good of a deal (before import charges and shipping lol)

see

those disney tapes aren't worth more than like 5 bucks to someone who wants pristine disney tapes

very few tapes are worth more than that; they're either incredibly rare early tapes, incredibly rare tapes from late 2006 and onward, demo tapes or promotional tapes

Yeah, digital media really... really killed the VCR and audio tapes.

I'm trying to scrape together parts for a family member.

Don't have too much, but I have a GPU lined up for me at the very least. It probably won't be finished this holiday season, but hopefully by this time next year I can get it done.

200 CAD buys you a 980 in canada. 250 buys you a 1060, 350-400 buys you a 1070. 600-800 CAD buys you a 1080

200 for a 980? It's like 330 CAD for one over here.

Yeah I bought one for 200 the other day on kijiji. Admittedly, it was part of a larger deal including a mobo + CPU. He was selling each individually for like 240 or something, or everything together for $400. I could have easily have sold the mobo + cpu for more than 200, but I just run folding on it instead.

When I was in the US I could get 960s (and equivalent cards) for ~$100 US.
