If it's a desktop then I'd just do what normal people do, and that is to put it into the PC itself.

Hey its for science XDXDXD Imagine having a pc as big as the egpu box, and then connecting the gpu to a thunderbolt port, or connecting a pci splitter used in miners to do Sli in a egpu box??

Maybe if it was the 90's then people would consider this but it's 2018 and most desktops can fit a dedicated video card inside of them, connecting a eGPU to a desktop would be a huge step back.

you can try, it most likely won't work well, it would be much simpiler to put the GPU inside of the pc.

So I just got an interesting idea, My computer has a thunderbolt 3 port on the motherboard. So I wanted to know if anybody knows the answer to this impractical question:

Could I in theory plug an egpu box into that port and use it as the gpu for my pc??

Would it work? if it is indeed thunderbolt 3, then yes, Is is practical? Most likely not, you may lose as much as 20% of your performance.
