I'm looking into performing some much needed maintenance on an old ps3 and thinking it might be worth examining the cpu and other chips beneath their IHS'.  I've never done this kind of thing before and in doing some research hear that you need some sort of silicon or other substance to reapply the IHS to the chips.  I'm curious if there are any specific silicon gels or other substances I should be looking into for this or even some instructions on how to reaply an IHS since all tutorials i'm finding only cover removal of the IHS.

And, quite honestly, I’m not sure de-lidding the cpu would be beneficial in any way at all

I mostly thought about it after seeing this guy's video (video below).  In part of it he removed the IHS and talked about how (i think on the CPU chip) if the thermal paste is so old it's dried up to non-effectiveness then it is the main culprit behind most systems running the fans extra hard in an effort to combat the overheating).  My system has never been opened once since getting it in 2006 so i know any and all thermal paste is just gone to hell and i'm sure there's dust in there (although not as bad as most since i have been using compressed air on all vents regularly).

I'm mostly just trying to look over all the different things I might need to do to the system when I open it in january for a deep cleaning and maintenance check.

It doesn't really matter what you use to reapply the IHS. If anything, you're only "gluing" the IHS down so it doesn't move around while you reassemble the machine. Once reassembled, the IHS is going to be firmly in place.

Ask a local ham - these guys often build their whole complex transceivers as kits. www.elecraft.com etc. He should know someone who does this kind of thing. And they are friendly, helpful guys. I would not recommend a DIY job if you have never done this kind of thing...
