i'm using avg but i have a feeling it could be a bit resource intensive. Just try use a decent, low resource usage one plus just be careful with downloads etc and you will be completely fine

Personally I use Norton 360. There's a lot of fanboyism against it but it's actually all BS. They say it uses lots of RAM, but in reality it uses less than 15MB when it's idle, around 50MB when it is doing a background quick scan, and about 300MB when you do a manual full scan + other operations. These number might be huge a decade ago, but today when most people are getting computers with 6GB+ RAM, these number become irrelevant.

The only credible downside to it is that it's paid. To me however, $40 a year for 3 PCs is nothing.

If you still don't want to pay, get the free version of BitDefender.

You should install Spybot - Search and Destroy, run the immunizer, and then uninstall it. Preferably every few months. It's best to run this with a fresh install of Windows or whatever OS you happen to use. For general antivirus use, Malwarebytes and even Microsoft Security Essentials will work just fine. Some viruses could be very pesky, but these applications should at least help you find out if you've been infected.

Keep in mind, though, when it comes to antivirus programs, each year they tend to be different in terms of performance. One antivirus program could be considerably worse compared to the competition later on.
