Best x99 CPU?

Just got a great deal on an x99 combo, wondering what the best CPUs are for the platform?

What is the best cost to performance?

What is the best performance wise, ignoring the cost?

The combo I've got is a Gigabyte X99-UD4 Motherboard, i7 5820k CPU, and 4x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4. Thinking about making a workstation for my friend with it, probably ditch the RAM and throw in a 64GB kit and maybe a 6950X? Not sure atm.

The 6950x is like $1000 on eBay, which stands to reason. The i9 7900x is also $1000, and has no sTIM, so it seems 10 cores is a $1000 ordeal. I do recommend 6th gen just cause it's a little better than 5th.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Agreed with above, skylake-E is a little more consistent with overclocking, and the extra bit of IPCs help. That said, the best value is whatever CPU you already have lol, cause you don’t have to pay extra for it. The 5820K is still a very viable CPU, I would still be using mine if my board didn’t die. But yeah if you want the best of the best then the 6950X is the obvious choice (if you can get a good deal on a 6900K though I would take that).

My Build, v2.1 --- CPU: i7-8700K @ 5.2GHz/1.288v || MoBo: Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E Gaming || RAM: 4x4GB G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 2666 14-14-14-33 || Cooler: Custom Loop || GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC Black, on water || PSU: EVGA G2 850W || Case: Corsair 450D || SSD: 850 Evo 250GB, Intel 660p 2TB || Storage: WD Blue 2TB || G502 & Glorious PCGR Fully Custom 80% Keyboard || MX34VQ, PG278Q, PB278Q

Audio --- Headphones: Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX || Amp: Schiit Audio Magni 3 || DAC: Schiit Audio Modi 3 || Mic: Blue Yeti

[Under Construction]

My Truck --- 2002 F-350 7.3 Powerstroke || 6-speed

My Car --- 2006 Mustang GT || 5-speed || BBK LTs, O/R X, MBRP Cat-back || BBK Lowering Springs, LCAs || 2007 GT500 wheels w/ 245s/285s

The Experiment --- CPU: i5-3570K @ 4.0 GHz || MoBo: Asus P8Z77-V LK || RAM: 16GB Corsair 1600 4x4 || Cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo || GPUs: Asus GTX 750 Ti, || PSU: Corsair TX750M Gold || Case: Thermaltake Core G21 TG || SSD: 840 Pro 128GB || HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB

R.I.P. Asus X99-A motherboard, April 2016 - October 2018, may you rest in peace. 5820K, if I ever buy you a new board, it'll be a good one.

I would stick with the current 6 core you got with it. The amount of money it would take to buy a better cpu would nullify the good deal you got. The x99 platform is kinda dead as far as being value competitive with newer offerings. I mean the kind if prices they are selling 8 core and 10 core cpus is kinda ludicrous.

If you are thinking of making a workstation with 64GB of RAM, I would guess you'd need some good CPU power also. In that case it would be the 22 core E5-2699v4, but motherboard will take anything from 6 to 22 cores, so pick your poison based on availability and prices on your local used market, and actual needs of the software it would run (if it prefers cores or frequency).
