Currently I have two hard-drives in my computer, a NVME boot-drive at 512GB and a 2TB  HDD data drive. Recently, I noticed that my HDD has been making some noticeable noises and I have no idea why or any pattern to it. During Black Friday I decided to buy a new 2TB hard drive as a replacement as I do not want to lose all my data and be sad... My question is what is the best way to swap the data from the one drive to the other? Would simply copy-and-pasting the data from one drive to the other do it? I would assume that would break file-paths and dependencies. Is there a simple way? I am not entirely sure what to do at this point and would appreciate some help.

Get cloning software.  What brand of HDD did you get?  Many manufacturers have their own, or there are free ones as well.

Then make sure to use the same drive letter for the new one too.

If you have software (not through steam) installed, then copy paste would break them. As for just regular files, its a simple copy paste. Steam games you can copy paste and then just add the steam folder on the HDD to Steam, it will detect all the games there.

The easiest way to just get all data moved would be to clone the drive, there is software out there for it.

Ok, thanks. I have both steam and other software installed, so copy and paste would not be a great idea. What is a decent cloning software?

It's not a drive specific software in that regard.  It's not that drives are different and it won't work, it's a permission thing.

You only get to use it if you have a WD drive in your system.  :)   Other manufacturers do the same.
