Currently have an i7-2600 which is 100% maxed all the time on new AAA games (BFV, SoTTR, etc.) and getting really tired of it.

I thought about upgrading to Ryzen 5 1600, is it a worthy upgrade from the i7 for gaming?

I don't have an infinite budget. Should I maybe get the R7 1700... something else?

(The i5-8400 is way too expensive to get rn)

tbh, the r5 1600, would actually be more of a sidegrade, are you on a 2600k or a 2600? you wouldn't notice much of a difference if any difference from a 2600-> 1600 since the single threaded performance is around the same

I'm on 2600.

My CPU performance in BFV is ~60FPS avg. while his (R5 1600) is ~120FPS avg. so yeah

for single threaded... intel would beat ryzen solely for gaming. an i3-8350k would most likely improve for single threaded games, as you can OC it to a faster speed. HOWEVER, the lower thread count would not be good for things that use multi threads.

that's odd, i have a friend on a 2600k, and he is getting around 100~ fps, with a 1060, what does your CPU utilization end around?

what do you mean by "end around"? It's 100% maxed all the time.

Windows 7? if you OC the 1600 i've heard it's pretty gucci, I didn't realize BFV utilizes the CPU so much, when i played the beta i had a 7500 and i was easily getting 80-100fps, but i don't recall the settings i was on.

EDIT: Are you playing on a monitor capable of more than 60hz?

Who still uses Windows 7? :P

I guess I'll get either the R5 1600/1700 or 8350k

They are both great CPU's if you get the 8350k just make sure you get an overclockable board, and last i heard the CPU just runs at the speed you set it at, but its pretty efficient and stays pretty cool even under full load at 5ghz

if you go from sandy bridge to a first gen ryzen you are in for a nasty surprise, r5 2600 would be better, a 8350k has 4 threads so you'll run into bottlenecking right out of the box on AAA games.
