if so I have a cable from the router to my room

"modem/router combo" => cable => switch => access point & desktop

wifi and desktop sorted out.

hi there

I am looking for a way to get better intenet around the house and in my bedroom.

I am a virgin media customer and the virgin router is at one end of the house and cant be moved. my bedroom is on the other side of the house at the furthest point from the router. currently I am using powerline adapters to get internet to my room but they aren't very reliable and don't give me a good speed in my room so is there a way to get better internet to my side of the house?

any help appreciated

So a powerline is the best way, I am guessing you aren't getting a good speed because your room is on a different circuit to where the router is plugged in.

You could try using a wifi extender.

cable if possible, obviously..

but depending on the powerline situation in your place (serious hit and miss, and from my experience more miss than hit) going for wifi repeater or mesh wifi may actually be the better solution.

Ethernet and an ethernet switch.

Or, connect the ethernet to a WiFi router in your room that is configured as an access point.  Then connect your PC with ethernet and also enjoy good WiFi on that end of the house.

you can stick a switch and access point on the opposide end of the house.. or preferably.. get a decent AP and hang it in the middle.. for as far as that's possible in any real-world house ofcourse.

What do you get plugged directly into the router? You sure your internet isn't just slow?

Also what powerlines are you using? They might just be wank.

If its a house, you can put it anywhere.  Attics are great for managing cables.

my access point is currently sitting under an ornate 2-liter beer glass, some places just have really terrible attics.

Did you try putting foil on one side?

i've done experimenting on this in the past... i dont understand what the people who get "3x better signal" are doing, because all it ever does for me is somehow improve the wifi in the basement.

also, 5GHz is notably worse range-wise, so that's most likely not a fix here.

Is it an old house with potentially bad wiring?
