Seeking adivce on SSDs and GPUs for new build

So i'm looking at upgrade my current computer (i7-5930k, 16GB RAM, GTX970, 1x TB HD (primary) and x1  2TB HD (storage and odds n sods)) and i've just got a few question about SSDs and GPUs, and if their right for me basically.

 

Firstly, my computer is on pretty much 27/4 (either idle or downloading) and only tends to get reboot to install windows updates or if software requires it. Now when i looked at building my current rig SSDs were still pretty new and fancy and had a short life span. Now there pretty much standard, can they cope being left on all the time without wearing out within a few years? I plan to upgrade every 4-5 years so it doenst have to last 10+ or anything. Workload wise it'll have windows, CAD programs and Photoshop, my favourite games/simulators etc so i was looking at a 2TB samsung 680 evo as the primary drive, with just a bog standard 2TB HD seagate 7200rpm for storage and odds n sods like i have now.

 

Secondly, RTX cards. I've heard a few times there not 'really' worth it and stay with the 10 series. My question ... is that STILL the case when your upgrading from a 9 series?? so am i better off getting a 1080 or a 2080??

 

I'm in a lucky spot where budget is around £3k so top of the range stuff isnt out of question, but i dont like spending money for spending it sake :)

Samsung 860 evo is rated for 1200TB (varies depending on storage size), that means you could you could write ~673GB PER DAY FOR 5 YEARS until the drive is at it's maximum TBW

 

The MTBF is rated with 1.5 Million Hours Reliability , which means 1500000/24 = 62500 Days / 365 = 171 Years in theory.

the 2080 is about 1080 ti performence with raytracing cores. (raytracing low makes the framerate already half). I would look into the 1070 ti if you want something cheaper, the 1080 ti if you can still find them, otherwise the 2080 is a great choise.

For your SSD I recommend Samsung 970 Pro m.2 name line-up, specifically the 2TB one for your situation. It has insanely fast read and writes and still has the 171 year reliability aswell as the 1200 TBW, which is a lot. For your HDD, Becuase you only want 2TB, Seagate brought out a 3.5" drive (ST2000DM008) which is 7,200rpm aswell as 256mb of cache. For your gpu and your use case I would get a titan xp, you can get them second hand for around £600, and they will do everything you want to do plus more.

The Samsung 860 evo is a great choice for a boot SSD. For gaming, a 1080 is enough, but what CAD software are you using? For Fusion360 and other "lighter" CAD programs the 1080 has plenty of power, but if you're working with Solidworks or NX, you might want to look into Quadro cards for their certified driver support.

thanks for the suggestions guys, nice to know SSDs can withstand that usage now :)

 

as to the card, the CAD stuff i do is pretty light, more hobby than pro, so the normal gaming cards can handle it just fine :)
