Only problems are the cost and speeds.

Surveillance drives are made for writing to like 90% of the time. Read speeds will be slower than normal HDDs.
Also cost a crap ton more than tradditional HDDs.

hdd made for cctv usually have low rpm.

for gaming pc? no, get a full speed 7200rpm one.

The have a 256MB cache running at 5400 rpm and are rated for 180 terabytes of writing in a year so if your not worried about it being a tad on the slow side I guess that it would be okay, one thing for sure, you won't have to worry about running out of space for your saved games for a very long time.  Oh yea, they aren't cheap when bought new but are supposed to last forever.

No, surveillance drives are made for one specific purpose, writing 24/7, they're not made to be used in another way and will perform less than optimally, just get an ironwolf or ironwolf pro drive :)

That's why you are supposed to have backups! If you have properly maintained made and maintained backups, you don't have to worry about losing ANY data. I'm tired of the myth that larger drives are not as safe as multiple smaller drives. ?

Exactly. Surveillance drives do not have any error correction when writing since they have to be recording a continnuous stream.

Granted, the better the drive, the longer it is likely to last but no drive will last forever, no matter how good it is.  Any drive is subject to sudden, irreversible failure without any warning no matter the quality or age (I've had drives arrive DOA). That's why backups are essential!

Overall if you need a drive that can work 24/7, then get a drive that was built to support 24/7 work periods like the suggestions given earlier. You can see more details in the following link and feel free to post any question should have one: https://www.seagate.com/internal-hard-drives/

Hi, need some help/advice from pros (I'm a newb)

I am looking to upgrade my system storage and stumbled upon a 10TB Seagate Skyhawk Surveillance HDD.
Will it be good for a gaming PC?

THANKS!

Surveillance Hard Drives are designed to store security information from security cameras and what not.

They constantly write collected data from the cameras to the drives 24/7.

That said...putting all your eggs in one basket usually can lead to bad results...

If just trying to increase the size of the usable storage in the "active" system it is better from a financial stand point to consider 4 3TB.

-1 for OS HHD, 1 for video and audio, 1 for games or work, 1 for artwork and miscellaneous.

-This keeps a hard drive failing from destroying the whole system and makes restoring less painful.

-The price of the 10 TB drive -which here is over $350 could be easily reduced by doing the above and getting the 3TB's for $75

-A savings of $50 -may not seem like much but if one of the drives fails here upon after you would be out $75 not 300+ for one drive.

-You could go for 3 4 TB drives -though that would definitely be more expensive.

However If just looking to use it as a backup drive that will ONLY be connected to put data on or restore data that is lost then it like any hard drive is fine.

You could switch to SSD but for 10TB? That would a wee bit excessive.

If by putting all your eggs in one basket means doing so can lead to more data loss, horse feathers. As long as the drive is properly backed up, there will be NO data loss. Also, the more drives one has, the more complicated keeping backups becomes.

For some odd reason, 3TB HDDs tend to have poorer user reviews. The OP would be better off using three 4TB, a pair of 6TB, or a single 10TB HDD. He also would need a couple of the same size drives for each drive he gets to use for onsite and offsite backups.

And if not backed up is it then?

Nothing was said about the state of his Data BU.

Erring on the side of caution.

Granted.

It probably makes sense that 3TB would have lower reviews since the squared curve for hard drive capacity would hit a bottleneck with a 3 TB...

Though there is one 4TB model that I would veer far away from:

Seagate 4TB model: ST4000DM000

It is a lemon waiting to happen... at least according to newegg reviews...

Complicated back ups are sometimes necessary but then again that is for redundancy within redundancy within a data BU separate course.

Anyone not backing up their data is foolish. It's worse than driving a car without insurance.

They don't have to be complicated if one avoids situations that will make them complicated.

The only reason my desktop will have five 4TB drives is those are the largest consumer SSDs available right now. I would be much happier with three 8TB or two 10TB SSDs. It would also cut down on the number of backup drives I have to keep up with.
