Is there a Redrocket for H264?

Im looking for a PCIe card with  dsp chips for  decoding h264 only.  GPU decoding with cuda actually uses more power than Intel cpu  based acceleration.   If there is a card that is specific to h264 like the red rocket is to red files, I may be able to reduce power consumption and increase work efficiency dramatically.

Isn't H264 decoding built into everything and is now a joke to do?

if 265 is out there sure that would be great too.

 

and yes, all the cards will do 264. (new cards anyways)

 

as an example,  intel quicksync enabled lowers CPU to 15%, vs 50% with it disabled.  GPU would be at 0 an the machine wattage is about 200.

 

   Now that cuda is working, the decoding can be done on the GPU, and the cpu does drop down to 3% but the GPU goes to 100% and the power draw goes up to 240+ watts.  Its actually worse to use  the GPU in this case.  

 

The DSP chip in a NVR is extremly efficient at decoding h264 streams. Better than GPU or intel quicksync.  What Im trying to determine  is if you can buy those DSP's on a PCIe Card. I found several encoding cards, but no decoding cards.

On GPUs it's using the VID so the usage looks like it's 0% when in reality the VID is at 100%.

Unless GPU decoding is enabled, its not using the GPU at all. you have 3 choices.  Software decoding,  Intel Quicksync acceleration, and Cuda acceleration.  (you can also record direct to disk and not decode at all, but thats not being used here)

20+ 4k streams from security cameras. And it  cant even do all 20.  and its streamed directly from the cameras in h264.  

 

remote viewing and viewing in the GUI require decoding.

Probably uncompressed AVI files. I made some with AE that were close to 100gb for 7 minutes

This was already running on a machine with an 8700k.  It worked fine. they just finally enabled GPU acceleration, but using it is more power inefficient that using the CPU.  The problem is I need more CPU so I can add more cameras. So i have to offload to the GPU.   

 

and the device your talkingabout is called a NVR. network video recorder. they are fine for home installs and small systems. But I dont know of on that works with this many cameras, and I prefer to use the software im using, not the NVR.  they are very limiting on what you can do. with software on a server/pc I can do several things like send my self texts, and motion detection, direct  remote access, etc.

Then probably just get some kind of cheap used many core Xeon system? or a 1920/50X potentially,,,dunno about it's decoding capabilities, but at least that would have more GPU slots as well.

 

Could try asking this guy what he did, may be different cameras though.

There's probably some kind of hardware thing you can buy to do this before it goes into a PC though...

I appreciate your advice, but we've already been all over our options. the cheapest route at this point is to build a second PC. an old xeon server would be more money from both a cost, and power standpoint.    The point of the thread, is finding out if there is a Card available that I can ask the software maker to get working.

The NVR doesnt "just"  decode.  it also stores the footage... instead of storing in on the storage server,  and it also voids and opportunity to use any 3rd party software to control your cameras, notifications, etc.  They also have trouble if multiple cameras get alot of action at once, those newer ones are a bit better in this regard.  some of them do allow remote access, but again, you lose the amount of control you have with 3rd party software.  (things like permanently setting the bit rate, or setting areas to ignore motion, or sending yourself texts notifications) 

the device you just linked eliminates both the NVR and the Server. it just allows you to physically plug in a camera to any monitor.  I guess you could record it with a capture card, but thats very inefficient for as many cameras as we're trying to hand.  That thing would be the equivalent of plugging your old analog cameras into their RCA converter box, into a VCR.

There are apparently ones that will happily do up to 128 channels, let you remote in, hot swap drives in, auto backup, support raid etc.
