Mobo recommendations needed for Ryzen 3 build

Hi,

 

I'm working on a budget pc build around the Ryzen 3 1300x. I need a reliable AM4 B350 atx motherboard that's good quality and ideally under $100 that'll work well for casual gaming and general purpose computing. A big must is a white/black board to fit the color scheme I want. Thanks.

Says AB350, does it differ at all from a B350 chipset or is it the same thing? I'm a noob. First time build.

It has everything you need and usually variance between motherboards aren't very noticeable.

for mobo (assuming that you decided the form factor already), then there are only two rules:

 

1. If you want a Ryzen 7 (not recommended for gaming) in the future, get X370

 

2. MSI should take a lower priority because of their worse memory support (still preferred if it's a higher end board than the other comparison).

 

3. RGB?

I don't plan on upgrading to a Ryzen 7 in the future. I looked at one MSI board that got my attention and seemed good. Unlike the ASRock pro4 this one supports 3200Mhz memory. I've heard you want to go with faster ram if you've got a Ryzen CPU since they do much better with faster ram apparently? The $20 difference isn't bad... but on a budget would you say it'd be better to just go with the ASRock one suggested by the other dude? RGB isn't a big selling point for me so I don't care.

For a Ryzen 3, anything is good enough. However, I can personally recommend the ASRock AB350 Pro4 for casual gaming and general purpose needs. As long as you have no intention of pushing extreme CPU overclocks (4GHz or higher), it'll suit you well. It's also fully capable of 3200MHz memory and higher. Any ambiguity you may find regarding supported memory frequency comes down to the processor being used and silicon lottery. Ryzen officially only supports up to 2666MHz. Anything higher is considered an overclock, and not technically supported. But we all know that's just AMDs way of covering their own asses in the event things don't work. "Oh, your 3200MHz memory doesn't work? Sorry, we only support up to 2666."

 

I own this board and have it paired with a Ryzen 5 1600 with 3000MHz rated ram. I've overclocked the memory to 3200 with only minor issues. With a bios update to AGESA 1.0.0.6b (version 3.2 or 3.3), you'll be fine with memory support in most cases. As long as you don't cheap out and get some 2x4GB Dual Rank offbrand nonsense. Just do your homework on what other people are using and are having success with, and you should be fine. Research "Samsung B-Die" in your spare time. Expect to spend at least $200USD, though for something nearly guaranteed to work.

Not a promise. Besides, gains from increased memory frequency drops significantly after 2800MHz so no need for faster ones unless the price difference is small

 

As for the mobo itself, they are similar in performance but one thing, MSI have bad track record on memory support.
