Docking station and monitor for rMBP 13

I have a friend who is looking for a docking station and a monitor for his rMBP 13.  For the monitor he is looking for something decent, but he doesn't want it to cost hundreds of dollars. If you guys have any good suggestions please let me know, I don't work with Macs very often.

I use something called HengeDocks: https://hengedocks.com/products/vertical-macbook-pro-retina. It's a bit pricey at $119 for a dock but works well and saves space; you would need to also provide your own power cable. What's the mininum resolution and size he requires for the monitor?

Why waste 120 dollars when you can use a mini displayport cable?

Please quote if you want a person to reply, they won't get a notification otherwise.

That's not everything required to dock and this saves space on a desk. You need the power cable, 1 or 2 mini display ports, audio output if you want to use speakers, etc. and it becomes a mess of cables on a desk. You can counteract this on a budget though by getting a stand or not for the mac and one of those thunderbolt adapter cables that you can connect all the needed stuff out of sight and just connect that one thunderbolt cable to dock your MacBook when you want to.

All I was asked was less than a couple hundred dollars. I mentioned that in the OP, that is as much as I was told.
