Lawn Replacement using Ground cover

This is mainly for people who own their homes and are responsible for the yard upkeep.

I've been toying with the idea of replacing sections, or the entirety, of my lawn with ground cover.  Meaning plants that are by nature sprawling, dense, but do not get very tall.   This would mean less to no mowing on my part; which would be awesome since i have a 1/3 acre piece of suburban property in Hot as hell virginia.

I was wondering if anyone else has experimented or done this and what their thoughts were on the matter?

Right now the contenders for plants are Creeping Red thyme, Snow in Summer, Sweet Woodruff, and Blue Star creeper.

These would make the yard look pretty nice and cover the full sun to mostly shade spectrum of my yard.
