R9 390 high temps after RMA

LuciferZ

I know that the title is a little clickbaity but bare with me. Before like 2 months I had a problem where any kind of hardware acceleration would cause my gpu to crash and stop giving signal to my monitor. I am guessing it was duo to the 300mhz to 1500mhz jump and voltage couldn't follow up. I RMA'd it to the local dealership and I am not sure if they sent the card back to gigabyte or just their own service but the original problem was fixed but the temps now are through the roof. I have 3 month of warranty left so I don't feel like opening the card and checking the paste and the foils.

Some high temp examples:

heaven benchmark high preset : 86C + at 80% fan speed

csgo smoke rendering at 1024x768 black bars : 75C+ at 50%

I am not sure what to do but I am pretty sure these temps are abnormal. If you need any more information please ask away and I will provide, I am just not sure what to do anymore. Using the latest beta drivers by amd.

It's a 390. It's rated up to 95C as a normal function. If you want a more efficient card then get yourself something NVIDIA or a lower end AMD. While the etherium mining craze is on you can sell it for over $300 and buy yourself a 1060/1070 instead.

are you really running a 390 at 1500MHz ???

try Firestrike loop stability test. if that's ok with reasonable fan speed then it'll do fine

I am aware but my temps were never this high, could they have forgotten to apply thermal paste after fixing the issue?

I recall the cooler is pretty crappy. What is your card temperature when running Unigine Heaven in Freeroam?

@DXMember I am aware but that's the jump the voltage couldn't follow as far as I could troubleshoot it, that's the reason it was previously sent for RMA

I'd say you RMA that thing immediately and ask for dramatic cooling effect with higher bandwidth for electrons or money back:

I believe I said RMA it again if you're not satisfied, like 3 times already...

Either they did a bad job applying thermal paste or they flash another BIOS with more aggressive voltage or both.
