Transfer Windows from laptop to new PC

Sorna

Hello,

So after alot of research for my new pc i am finally able to purchase and get the parts i need.

The only thing that hadnt come up to my mind while saving was the Operating System i was going to

install on it. I already have a laptop that used to have Windows 8.1 (though was updated to

Windows 10 while it was free) and so i thought i could transfer it to my brand new PC for free.

Even though i'm sure i had read some posts in the past which mentioned you could transfer your

operating system to 3 other devices, i have  recently noticed that alot of people say you cant

do that and that you need to purchase it from scratch.

This kind of ruined my mood because after finally getting all the money that i needed,

this meant i would need to put my pc purchase on hold since i would have to save

some more money for the OS aswell.

So all im asking is weather it's possible to add Windows (preferably Windows 10)

on a new PC without having to buy it again.

PS. Please dont suggest stuff like cracked Windows or anything thats not

in the official form.

Thanks for your time :D

unfortunately you probably will have to buy another windows license unless you have an OEM key (like on a sticker on ur PC)

if you put that drive into, or clone your OS onto, another PC; the new hardware will be detected by windows and it will deactivate.

If you are able to rollback your laptop to Windows 8.1 you can transfer the OS over. Once Windows 8.1 is on your new PC you can choose to update to Windows 10 for free by changing the date to July 29th, 2016 or earlier. What kind of storage device will your new PC have? Did your laptop come with a recovery disc?

Hi Mate, You could install Win10 from a pen onto your new HDD/SSD and ProduKey your old system, google 'ProduKey by Nirsoft', awesome piece of software that rips out your serial key. Try that first!

the only work around there might be, is if you've linked your licence to your microsoft account, and you can manually force activation by saying you've made a significant hardware change, but you might just need to suck it up and buy a new key.

Intel i5-6600K@4.2GHz, 16GB Crucial DDR4-2133, Gigabyte Z170X-UD3, Be quiet shadow rock slim, Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ OC, Fractal design Integra M 550W, NZXT S340, Sandisk X110 128GB, WD black 750GB, Seagate momentus 160GB, HGST 160GB

Thank you guys for the responses,

seems like a friend of mine has some copies of windows 7 or 8.1 at his office

and so he may give one to me. If i get the official 7 or 8.1 version would i still

be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free or i would be stuck with those versions?

Laptop keys are all OEM. Win7, 8 and 8.1 are non-transferrable if original key was activated on laptop.

Free upgrade period has ended. Win7 is good for another 3 years (updates stop at 2010), I'm sure you can save for new OS in that time. Win8.1 is good until 2023.
