Home Automation

Hello Everyone,

I posted a more detailed topic in the new build and planing but I think splitting it in different topic might be less overwhelming.

I just got a new house and the little automation specialist in me wants to make his life easier.

My plan is to use OpenHab to manage and control everything that I can and easily create default sets of parameter for specific device.

I opted to use Z-Wave device connected to a RaspberryPi with the RaZberry module on it. Also I got a RaspberryPi with the 7in Foundation screen running HABPanel to have a controller sitting in wall powered by a POE adapter.

The OpenHab application would run on a docker on a linux App server. Also my idea in a near future was to get some POE camera running of a switch and use ZoneMinder do the recording. I also own a couple of Sonos speaker so something that has a plugin for that would be useful.

I don't know if there is better solution out there. I don't want anything coming from Google/Samsung/Other software vendor that likes to collect customer data.

Thanks!

Sounds good. I prefer to use the ESP2866 modules along with SSR's, since they are hilariously cheap. They do require programming and electronics knowledge, but for about 20 bucks I can control 3 main lights in my room along with an RGB strip. Plus of course there is the possibility to integrate the whole thing into IOT to collect data and whatnot.

Yeah insurance company would've not covered the custom thermostats I had in mind... Running ethernet to it and use SSR to drive the heating element. On the controller I had the DS18B20 with a SPI display (3in I think) and toggle button to change the setpoint. The only thing was... Electrical code... Instead I got the Stelpro Ki Z-Wave to do the job...
