High Gpu Idle Temp

tahmidkhan123

My XFX RX 470 idles around 55 degrees celcius, which is way higher than any previous card i have ever owned. Under load, it only goes up to about 72 degrees celcius so im pretty sure that the fans and cooling are working normally, but is there anything i can do about the idle temps, or is it ok. The fans don't spin at idle.

Custom profile would do it. Have the fans sit at 30% until the card hits 50-55 then go up like it normally does.

You can still tweak fan curves on cards with the 0db feature.

MSI Afterburners settings has a fan curve manipulator.

Set the 25-35% as minimum and your fine.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

XFX (and many others) have a feature where the fans just stop blowing air when the card's idling (or under light load up to 65 ºC or so) to make it quieter. Those high idle temps are perfectly fine.

Ye ole' train

I just don't like my card idling at temps higher then when it's under load.

Not a fan of fanless cards at idle neither, the cooler the better [:

Seeing idle temps in the 50's at idle is normal if the fans aren't spinning. 72°C at load is fine.

You can certainly set the fan curve to never go below 30% or so if you wish, but I can't see any reason to do so unless it just makes you feel more comfortable to see a lower number. I don't believe the GPU itself cares whether it idles at 55° or ~40° or whatever, and I don't think either scenario would affect the card's lifespan in any meaningful way.

The card itself won't but the thermal paste will. Especially if it's the stock stuff. It's the first thing thats replaced when I get a card. Most don't keep their cards long or care about it's efficiency so it really doesn't matter.

Are the 72 under full load, like a benchmark?

Unigine heaven usually gets it up to 72 but it's the same story with most games as well. GTA 5 sees temps around 70 degrees... I found a few reviews of this card online where thermal performance was also looked at and those cards all ran at 74-75 degrees celsius. In my experience, amd cards run quite hot, and this one is no exception.
