New HTC Vive Build

dizmo

Hey all!

Last weekend me and a buddy drove down to Bellevue so he could try out the HTC Vive. Needless to say he was instantly sold, and was asking what kind of system he should build.

He immediately started looking at parts and started saying things like "dual CPU" and "5960x". I need to save him from himself.

It won't be built immediately, as I want to way and see if Broadwell-E is close to launching. If that's the case he'll get one of those CPU's.

If it proves to be worth it, he'll buy 2 1080's.

Build goals: VR at the best settings.

Budget: No more than $3,000 USD.

Peripherals/OS: Not needed.

Aesthetics: None. Case will not have windows.

Other:

I don't see a point in getting any HDD storage at this price. He doesn't need mass storage, and 1TB is more than enough for loads of games.

No need to max out the budget.

He wants a copy of Windows from a reliable source, so no G2A etc.

This is the system that I came up with.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-5930K 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor  ($475.00)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i v2 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($94.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus X99-A/USB 3.1 ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard  ($189.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($154.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: OCZ TRION 150 960GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($199.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Founders Edition Video Card  ($699.99 @ NCIX US)
Case: Fractal Design Define XL R2 (Titanium Grey) ATX Full Tower Case  ($99.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM (64-bit)  ($83.89 @ OutletPC)
Total: $2098.82

He wants a high core count CPU, as he upgrades pretty rarely. Since he might go with a SLI system the 40 PCIe lanes are a nice feature.

Doesn't need a fancy motherboard, this one should do.

I went with this SSD as it's quite cheap, and has pretty good performance numbers. Sure, it's not as "fast" as a Samsung 850, but it's loads cheaper and I don't think the milliseconds of difference will be that noticeable in day to day use.

I went with the 850w PSU in case he decides to throw in another card.

32GB of RAM because he likes high numbers. Was tempted to go with 16GB, but 32 isn't that much of a higher price.

The graphics card will likely be changed to a board partner card, but they didn't have pricing on any so I figured higher is better.

Interested to see what the communities thoughts on the build are, and what would be changed.

Thanks!

I was thinking about that, kind of torn. I don't think he'd plan on upgrading anytime soon, and usually if you call Microsoft they'll let you install new hardware.

I'll have to see what the price on the full version is.

Looks good, but i personally would go for a R5, the XL is huge!! And i wouldn't get all that nice hardware to cheap out on the SSD, it's not just for the ridiculous speeds, but also for reliability, i would always go back to Samsung for SSDs, at that budget also for a 950 Pro, because: why not and it's the newest tech in storage out there. Maybe get the 256GB 950 Pro and then an 850 pro or evo for "storage" 512GB or 1TB
