After Effects CC - Scale Wipe (among other effects) will not render outside of the element's box.

Apologies for my rather odd title. I'm simply unsure how to describe my issue. 
 
Using After Effects CC, I am attempting to stretch an element using Scale Wipe, in order to create a pseudo-shadow. I was able ot do this flawlessly a few months ago, but now I no longer can. Below is what shows up when I attempt to do so:
 


As you can see, the effect is bound by the box around the text, and cannot stretch any further. The same occurs if I attempt the same affect on the shape layers as well. Text, shape layers ,images, it doesn't matter.

I've tried re-installing After Effects, deleting my preferences, and I'm honestly not sure what to do. For clarity, my copy is legitimate, and it is the latest update.

Help?
