It could also be gunk in the track pad.

Plugged into the same computer? The trackpad isn't disabled when you plug in a mouse.

@Tmt97, dur yu' go. Make sure you test that by swiping on the trackpad when you have your mouse plugged in.

 

I looked through the thread again... I don't see an explanation of "crash" anywhere.  That word can carry about a dozen different meanings depending on who you ask and the context in which it is used.  But you description has no context.. only "it crashed."  What does that mean?  

 

It's very unlikely a software (even malware) problem. But if you've had the notebook for 5 years, it has probably seen plenty of tosses and joggles.

Then we have confirmed the track pad is either dirty or failed. 

If the machine is still under warranty, i'd take it into an apple store/authorized repair center and have them clean it. 

It's fairly easy to clean, but you need to have the right tools.

Well its 5 years old so I suspect the warranty is long gone. I never used the track pad anyway, so I'm fine just leaving it disabled. Thanks again for the help!

Dunno when $50 became cheap... I think I might have some flash drives hanging around, Ile try to move some data to them.

$50 became cheap in the long term. Multiple copies of any data you'd be upset to lose. Pretty simple.

$50 became cheap when you *almost* lost important data, and it became REALLY cheap when you *did* lose important data.
