Dying Light and VRAM

Kevin_Walter

I see a common "fact" that is reported about Dying Light using 3.5GBs of VRAM getting thrown around all over the place, but the sources for these claims all seem to be from tests or anecdotal evidence while using 4GB GPUs.

Are there are reliable VRAM usage benchmarks out there for Dying Light using smaller and larger cards at the same settings/resolutions for comparison? I've seen some claim that the game was using over 4.5GBs while running a 6GB card, and others (including myself) showing much less when running the game on smaller cards.

In my own personal experience, running an R9 270X 2GB, with shadows, foliage, and textures set to high, I only saw around 1700-1800MBs of VRAM usage when monitoring with MSI Afterburner. The biggest inconsistency with my result, however, is that I do not have a 1080p monitor. The game is played at 1600x900. I'm not sure if the increase in resolution would also increase the VRAM usage by nearly 100%, however.

It's something worth testing, in my opinion. Though I lack the means to do so.

I was reaching my 3GB cap on whatever the high settings are and half render distance, with a resolution of 2560x1440. I could see it going beyond 3GB easily at that resolution.

If I turn shadows down from very high to high vram usage drops by like 250MB

I have max settings, 1080p, without motion blur and 50% on view distance and was capped at around 3.5gb. the game would stutter if I tried entering a cut scene to fast. Setting view distance to minimum solved the issue with vram at about 3gb now

Running a gtx 980 with 4gb

I get around 1878mb usage on everything but textures, field of view 94 and half view distance no aa

And right at 4 gigs with aa and high textures..

I don't get any stuttering except when my normal ram gets maxed out at 8gb only when I leave LTT running in the background though.

I don't know for sure but it seems like there is some kind of overflow when you run out of vram.

Maybe optimized for using system memory better then most games, all my other games it's impossible not to notice when you cap out vram.

if this helps there u go all my tests were at 1080p

Game will use as much as it can and optimise itself if you don't have enough. There isn't just a blanket 3.5GB Requirement.

I seem to use 3.7GB at 1440P on my 980'S

My bro mentioned the R0R9 290 hitting around 3.4-3.5GB at 1080P.
