Is internet speed independent of computer?

Gin

I've wondered this.

If you have a $300 laptop and a $2000 high end desktop, will they each run at the exact same internet speed or will there be a difference?

Overall, there isn't MUCH of a difference but internet speeds can be affected by the type of wireless connection (2.4ghz or 5ghz), what kind of wireless card is used and what kind of ethernet port.

Short answer - yes

Long(er) answer - unless there's some serious performance problem with the network adapter in the $300 machine, then yes the internet speed will be the same.

Note - that doesn't mean that the machines will appear to work equally quickly in all instances. The cheaper machine will take longer to draw browser windows or may have more problems displaying an online video, for example. But something like downloading a file should be more or less equivalent.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.
