Can this be used as a NAS?

_se7en

Can I use below build as a decent NAS? If no, any suggestions on what can I use it for?

ASRock A75M-ITX  + AMD A6-3500 + 4GB RAM

What drive setup do you plan on using?

That should be more than plenty to fill up a 1gbe connection.

I am pretty new to this. Can you suggest something?

what is your budget for drives, how much capacity do you need. do you want to easily pop in more drives when you need more storage (unraid, easy but paid). or do you want to expand by ZFS pools, freenas/basically any other NAS OS.

Probably get a single bigger hdds, or two if you want raid 1.

Make sure to have backups aswell.

For os, unraid is great for easy expansion, otherwise di use something like  freenas or openmediavault.

Anything in the past decade can be a nice nas server.

Are you buying new or used?

If you're buying new, go for AM4 Athlon instead, it's newer , low powered and you can upgrade to ryzen if you need to.

Buying it used from one of my peers for $40. Worth?

4-5 TB should be enough. Considering this is my first try at this, I am thinking of going for something cheap. Any suggestions on the drives and OS?

Raid 1 sounds good.

Yes, very good offer. Get the smallest ITX case, it will make a nice nas build.

Thanks @SupaKomputa, @Electronics Wizardy, @berberries.

Can you suggest a cheap option for the drives? Is buying used a good option?

If you raid 1, i think you can get away using used drives.

Just make sure the health are good (using crystal disk info or HDsentinel).

Check the usage hour, under 500 hours is okay (i have drives with 2000 hours and still 100% health).
