My First Build in 15+ Years - Wanting Opinions

Memory: 2x TridenT Z 8gb

GPU: XFX Radeon RX 5700XT THICC III

Storage: 500gb WD Black NVME & 2tb Barracuda HDD

PSU: ThermalTake 750w 80+ Gold

Case: Musetex Phantom 903 w/ 6 built in RGB fans

Monitor: 2x Samsung C24RG50 (One monitor arrived and am awaiting one more coming tomorrow)

Again, this was my first build in 15+ years. Took about 3 hours start to finish (including Windows install). Got POST on first attempt too! That made me proud. Had my 9 and 10 year old sons helping me with the install of pretty much everything in hopes to teach them that it is a process and hoping that they learn to care for it since they had a hand in building it. For those curious about the 500gb SSD and 2tb HDD combo, that came down to a price vs storage amount issue for me. Total after tax and shipping for all pieces was around $2,000 USD.

It looks great! The only two things I would consider are:

  1. eventually upgrading the cpu cooling if the stock fan is too noisy.
  2. Grabbing a cheap 128gb ssd to accelerate the HDD once AMD releases the updated storemi. (I think it’s coming later this month)

Very nice build. Just one suggestion, I would highly recommend placing the case on a piece of wood or at the very least cardboard, you will starve you PSU of air, which is not ideal.

He has a 500gb nvme ssd

Yes, but 500gb fills up very fast and waiting for hard drives to load games sucks. Accelerated hard drives have ssd load times after the first launch at a fraction of the price. I use a $32 ssd to accelerate a 2tb drive I ripped out of an old external drive all accelerated with primo cache. The load times on my HDD are now comparable to the load times on my Corsair MP600 pcie 4.0 ssd.

wait is this some method I completely didn't know about, what you are talking about is like caching (like optane)?

Thanks man! I have a pair of monitor risers coming today that are going to go under the PC for the airflow.

So far the stock fan seems ok. I'm not too worried about noise, unless I'm gaming while my wife sleeps, at which point I will figure something out there.

Yea pretty much! You’re pretty much creating your own SSHD except your giving the HDD a lot more SSD cache (most sshds only have around 8gb of flash storage). Since games are relatively agnostic to flash storage speed you can just throw in a cheap SSD and greatly improve the experience of using a hard drive.

Hmmm.. So I have a 128gb 2.5" SSD just sitting around.. I could use that as a "cache" for my HDD?

I picked up the 30 day trial for primocache and loved it, the trial just ran out and I was going to purchase the liscence but Linus said Storemi was going to come out with the XT cpus. I'm just waiting for it to set up my caching again.
