LG 27 GL850B IPS Glow

WinterFresh1

I can't use this monitor without an external light source at night.

This effect is called IPS glow or so i thought

Is it really normal? I had VA monitor before and nothing like that.

Do not get me wrong Lg works fine in games but watching darker videos/movies feels awful at night.

So VA dont have IPS glow because ..their not IPS ..same goes for TN.

As for IPS glow itself, u have 2 forms, the 'natural' blue glow of the screen, and the yellow/orange glow u get in corners of the screen.

The later can differ from panel to panel (the panel lottery), but more importantly it will change depending on the angle of view that particular point of the screen is to your eyes.

So

Change ur view distance and view angle slightly, if the amount of glow changes, its IPS glow, if it does not change at all then its backlight bleed. Neither can be fixed outright but u can do a few things to try reduce it.

The later IPS glow that changes by view angle ofc can be lessened by shifting ur viewing angle and distance form the screen.

The BLB , u can attempt a DIY fix by pinching and pulling on the bezel and tightening / loosening the screws holding the screen together.

The 'former' type of IPS glow, the 'blue glow', cant be altered, thats just native to IPS and is why IPS is a bad panel choice for use in dimly lit rooms.

You can ofc try ur luck at the panel lottery again and get it replaced under warranty or store returns period.

or if u intend on using the display in a dark room frequently, u should consider purchasing a different display that uses a VA panel instead as they are vastly superior in that respect. BUT understand that VA has its own drawbacks, namely slow pixel response especially in dark transitions, getting a fast one is rather expensive and even then they wont be as fast as a good IPS or TN.

LCD displays are a lesson in compromise, u will never find one that does everything well, every type of panel , every LCD display from monitors to TVs, has a critical flaw.

generally speaking if you want to be able to enjoy all aspects, from gaming, to work. to movies, you do the following....

Buy a TN display for competitive gaming (fast pixel response, terrible image quality)

Buy another display, one that is IPS, for color accurate work & casual gaming (wide color gamut and viewing angles, low contrast and poor black levels)

and buy yet another display, one that is VA, for Movies & casual gaming (great contrast and black levels, slow pixel response, narrow viewing angles)

you cant just buy 1 LCD display that is great for everything
