Trying to figure out 3.1 gen 2 gaming controllers.

Recommended Posts

I cannot find a single usb to micro usb 3.1 gen 2 cord online. I'm guessing they only make them in 2.0? I don't understand.. Xbox one ports are 3.0 ports but the controller itself does not support anything more than 2.0? I'm not sure what's going on here because the new elite series controller uses type-c which does support 3.1 gen 2 speeds but I don't want to go and waste $200 dollars just to bring one home open it up and find yet another 2.0 usb cord in the box. Can anybody help make some sense of this? I just want to plug my controller into the 3.1 gen 2 usb port on the back of my machine. Thanks!

XBox One controllers charge over a standard micro-USB 2.0 connector. Why do you think you need USB 3.1 Gen 2 speeds for your controller?

USB 3.0 micro-B connectors have a different shape and more pins, so they would never fit anyways. I'm not even sure if micro-B was brought into the 3.1 GenX standards (because USB-C exists now and is just generally better; micro-B kinda sucks).

Any standard USB 2.0 A-to-micro-B (or C-to-micro-B, for that matter) cable should work (though there is an official cable, FWIW).

Main System (Byarlant): Ryzen 5 1600X | Asus B350-F Strix | Corsair H80i V2 | 16GB G.Skill DDR4 3200MHz CAS-14 | Reference Nvidia GTX 770 2GB | Samsung 960 PRO 512GB / Samsung 970 EVO 500GB / Seagate 7200RPM 3TB | Corsair CX650M | Mellanox ConnectX-2 10G NIC | Anidees AI-07BW Case | Dell U3415W Monitor | Microsoft Modern Keyboard

FreeNAS Server (Veda): Core i3-4170 | Supermicro X10SLL-F | Corsair H60 | 32GB Micron DDR3L ECC 1600MHz | 4x 10TB WD Whites / 1x Samsung PM961 128GB SSD / 1x Kingston 16GB SSD | Corsair CX430M | Mellanox ConnectX-2 10G NIC | LSI 9207-8i LBA | Fractal Design Node 804 Case (side panels swapped to show off drives)

Media Center (Jesta): Core i7-2600 | Asus H77M-PRO | Stock Cooler | 8GB No-name DDR3 | EVGA GTX 750Ti SC | Sandisk UltraII SSD 64GB / Seagate 1.5TB HDD | Corsair CX450M | Hauppauge ImpactVCB-PCIe | Syba USB3.1 Gen 2 Card | LG UH12NS30 BD-ROM | Silverstone Sugo SG-11 Case

Laptop (Rozen-Zulu): Sony VAIO VPCF13WFX | Core i7-740QM | 8GB Patriot DDR3 | GT 425M | Kingston 120GB SSD | Blu-ray Drive | (Still my favorite typing keyboard)

Tablet (ReGZ): Asus T102HA (BIOS clock doesn't tick, loses time when sleep/off) (I kill tablets with disturbing regularity)

Tablet (Unicorn): Surface Pro 2 (battery will reset total capacity to current charge, leading Windows to think it's always 100% charged until it dies)

Tablet (Loto): Dell Venue 8 Pro (screen discoloration issues, wouldn't update to Windows 10)

Tablet: iPad 2 16GB (WiFi died, basically useless after that)

Testbed/Old Desktop (Kshatriya): Xeon X5470 @ 4.0GHz | ZALMAN CNPS9500 | Gigabyte EP45-UD3L | 8GB Nanya DDR2 400MHz | XFX HD6870 DD | OCZ Vertex 3 Max-IOPS 120GB | Corsair CX430M (?) | HooToo USB 3.0 PCIe Card | NZXT H230 Case

Camera: Sony A7II (w/ Meike Grip) | Sony SEL24240 (better than most reviews say) | Sony SEL2870 (kit lens) | Sony SEL55F18F (meh, don't buy) | Sony SEL28F20 (on loan from a friend; really sharp) | PNY Elite Perfomance SDXC cards

The only real issue I'm having is on my mobo there are no more 2.0 usb cord ports so I'm using a 3.1 gen 2 port instead. which is backwards compatible but I just wasnt sure if xbox controllers themselves supported 3.1 gen 2 or not.. I know xbox one series don't because they dont make the micro usb at 3.1 but the new elite series controllers are type c which can support it. SO my guess here is the elite series is also 2.0.. I can just disable the 3.1 gen 2 ports in device manager because I'm sure they are just for data transfer anyhow.

Why, though? I'd just leave it alone.

What connector is it on your motherboard? A or C? Speed doesn't matter.

MicroUSB is USB2, but everything newer is backwards compatible.

Desktop: i7-5960X 4.4GHz, Noctua NH-D14, ASUS Rampage V, 32GB, GTX1070, 2TB NVMe SSD, 2x16TB HDD RAID0, Corsair HX1200, Thermaltake Overseer RX1, Samsung 4K curved 49" TV, 23" secondary

Mobile SFF rig: i9-9900K, Noctua NH-L9i, Asrock Z390 Phantom ITX-AC, 32GB, GTX1070, 2x1TB NVMe SSD RAID0, 2x5TB 2.5" HDD RAID0, Athena 500W Flex (Noctua fan), Custom 4.7l 3D printed case

type c.. which is gen 2.. so i could use a type c to c gen 2 cord on the xbox elite controller. but im sure its not a gen 2 device.

It would not be but it doesn't matter. You can use any C-C cable for the Elite, and any USB-C to microUSB on the other one.

Gen2 or not really does not matter at all.

not when it comes to 2.0 speed devices like keyboards mice and controllers. correct. but i still use the port for the controller anyhow. lol.

But the controller is a 2.0 speed device. Both of them. There is no need at all for any more than that for a controller.

It's most responsive port on the motherboard.

Completely irrelevant. Even USB1.1 is good enough for a controller with enough bandwidth and negligible latency.

Wink wink.. lol. Nah I'll prob disable the Gen 2 slot and use the 2.0 on the front of the case. Only one left.
