Workstation Build - Advice?

duckypath

Hey all. So it’s been 4 years since I’ve built a system, switched to Mac mini due to my requirements not really needing much. But recently I’ve been required to upgrade.

The primarily use will be Maya/Houdini with Mantra/Arnold. I will also be utilizing Clarissa/Katana so CPU will be important. Since it’s been so long I’m not really up to date on release schedules, or best comparability. So any help would be appreciated. GPU doesn’t need to be that great, as most of my resources will be geared toward CPU, with light GPU rendering with Arnold for pre-viz.

My budget is flexible, but $2000 is max. $1500 is better. No peripherals/monitor needed. I’ll also be using CentOs. So anything I should know with compatibility there?

Ill take all the help I can get. Thank you in advance.

Not much of an upgrade path going with x399.

I'll recommend something like this instead...You can even upgrade to a 3950x if needed.

3900x would be better than the 1920x because of higher clock speeds and better IPC. But you'll have comparitively less number of PCIe lanes in 3900x as compared to 1920x, though they are PCIe gen 4.

Video was a great addition thank you. I think the 3900x is a solid choice.
