Looking to Upgrade

Hello all, I am looking to figure out my PC situation. Recently I got a new 1440p 144hz monitor and was excited to finally break free of 1080 town but to my dismay most game I attempt to run do not hit 144hz after the 1440 upgrade.

What I'm wondering is: should the upgrade I take be my CPU, GPU or both?

My specs are:

CPU: Intel i7-6700k (not OC'd)

Motherboard: ASrock Z170 Pro4

RAM: 16GB (3 sticks for maximum disgrace)

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB

OS: Windows 10

As I said, I'm looking to take advantage of the monitor's resolution and refresh rate but I'm not entirely sure what upgrade options I have that aren't overkill in one way or the other.

Thank you for any help!

If there is anything else about my setup I can clear up just ask.

First I would definitely get a better GPU. It all depends on your budget of course, but since its 1440p 144hz, I would go with 2070 Super or higher.

Then see what FPS you're getting. If your CPU is going over 70% load, I would look to upgrade it in the near future.

Main system: Ryzen 7 7800X3D / Asus ROG Strix B650E / G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO 32GB 6000Mhz / Powercolor RX 7900 XTX Red Devil/ EVGA 750W GQ / NZXT H5 Flow
