Feedback on high-end, VR gaming build.

Building (but not paying) this for brother-in-law as Christmas gift. Will be primarily for gaming, but gamer aesthetic not required, ie RGB, side panel. Primarily the user wants to game with this machine, intends to buy VR headset (Vive?) Wants high end machine that will have long life. 2080 Ti, High frame rate, 1440p, 144hz at minimum.

Budget is Under $3000 CAD, but obviously would be happy

I have two different options I've been looking at. What do you think? Specific changes?

- You've mixed up the motherboard choices. ASUS is good for Intel, while MSI is good for AMD (i really wish motherboard manufacturers start to make shit with consistent quality, not flip-flopping around every other generation\chipset). For AMD i'd recommend MSI B450 A-PRO \ GP \ Tomahawk and for Intel, Z390 Gigabyte Elite \ Pro (WiFi), ASRock Taichi or ASUS Strix-F.

- Don't buy Samsung SSDs, they're overpriced. Get literally any other NVMe SSD except QLC ones (Intel 660p & Crucial P1) and very slow NVMes like HP EX900 (920\950 is fine), ADATA SX6000 (-Pro is fine), Patriot Scorch (other versions are fine), Mushkin Helix (Pilot is fine) and Lexar NM500\600. For the best performance look for ADATA SX8200 Pro, Corsair MP510, Mushkin Pilot, Team MP34, Inland Premium but the difference in gaming over other stuff will be rather minimal.

- You don't need 32GB RAM for gaming.

- Even for VR, RTX2080 Ti are still overkill, get RTX2080 Super.

- Get Phanteks AMP PSU (it's rebranded Seasonic Focus GX).

- As of main question, Intel or AMD, well you don't need R7 3800X for gaming to start with so it's really a question of whether to get R5 3600(X) or Intel i7\i9. Depends on what matters most for you, the best performance right now or ability to upgrade to better stuff down the road. Because while Intel still offers a bit better FPS and especially more stable FPS which is critical for VR, it doesn't have any upgrade potential, this platform is soon to be dead. While with this AMD motherboard you'll be able to upgrade to Zen 3\4 eventually which will likely offer better ST performance (and therefore gaming performance) than Intel even in the next generation releasing in the summer 2020.

Hi

I would not go for the Black unless it is the XC edition. A standard XC would be even better.

2080 ti like 5ghz CPUs if you are going for high refresh rate.  For over 1440p it does not matter.

A 970 EVO has no advantage over a SATA SSD in games and loading Windows. You are better off with a larger cheaper SATA SSD.

I have both and the EVO is not used for any off the shelf products.

My 5ghz CPU plus my 2080 ti uses almost 600 watts in some games. I think 850 watts is minimum with 1000 watts ideal.

I don't think even my 860 Corsairs likes running the 2080 ti but my 1000 watt Corsair is issue free.
