5700XT or 2070S for High Refresh

I am getting the itch to upgrade my RX 580 now that I have a 200hz 2560x1080 ultra wide monitor.

 

I figure in either case, my Ry 1700 at 3.9ghz will be pretty much maxed out.

 

Which would be better?

 

I am looking at either the Red Dragon 5700XT or ASUS STRIX 5700XT (I really like the ROG stuff, so I am leaning towards that).

 

I have been playing a bit of everything, but now that I have Origin Access and Xbox Game Pass, I really want better ultra wide high refresh performance for games like Destiny, Anthem, Gears 5, Battlefield V, etc.

 

I would also like to finally finish Tomb Raider with all of the pretty turned up.

 

Another driver for me us to pump out more performance from my Oculus when I finally get back into that.

 

I also do stream, but my Ryzen 7 handles it CPU wise while gaming without hiccups, so the media engine isn't super important for me, though I do run Plex.

Yeah a first gen Ryzen processor is going to be a limiting factor for high refresh rate pretty much across the board, outside e-sports I don't think that a 200hz target with it is realistic even if you got the RTX TITAN.

2070S is sightly faster but you have to see it the difference of price/perfomance is worth. I was in the same situation than you, 2560x1080, 5700XT/2070S, and I was about to buy the 5700XT but here it is selling at 500€ while 2070S is selling at 540€, so finally I bought the 2070S.

 

Both cards will run fine, for example in Gears 5 both have the same perfomance, in Battlefield V is better the 5700XT and in Destiny is better the 2070S, so, I think that it mostly will depend of the prices of both cards.

You are right. Overwatch, for example, I can currently do 200fps locked on low settings. I would like to bump that up to high/epic.

 

I am fine with maxing out what I have, since my next upgrade next year may be RAM + Zen 3.

 

What I don't like right now is trying to play on high/ultra in BF V and Anthem and only really getting 40fps-60fps. Anthem actually dips to 30 depending on what is going on.

How has your experience been? What performance are you getting?

Until now I only played Borderlands 3, which I consider that have a bad perfomance, it drops to 50fps (it doesn't go further) easily in stress situation (continuosly while playing with friends xDDDD), but, as I said, for me the game perfomance is bad. However it mostly goes at 60fps.

 

I can also play later MHW if you want to see how the card runs in some hunts, anyway I'm gonna pass the benchmark of BL3 capped at 75fps and unlimited, I'll post the results later.

From your experience with your 2080Ti, are those features worth it?

 

Streaming I am indifferent about just because my Ryzen 7 has been able to handle OBS CPU streaming on very fast preset fine, even with Oculus streaming. I am actually more interested in the custom API for Oculus that improves ASW quality with frame dips, but I haven't been doing much VR lately, so that is less of a concern.

 

I am definitely interested in Ray Tracing, and my only concern is that I make this investment now and then a year or two from now having a bit of buyers remorse for NOT having ray tracing.

To be perfectly frank... I have not used DXR at all yet.

Intel Xe GPUs are rumored out mid-next year, and rumors state they will have "baked in ray tracing" features. Also, the next nVidia GPUs (Ampere platform) are rumored to be out 1H2020. AMD also filed a patent in June for a hybrid system, using hardware and software to reduce the drop in performance for having ray tracing active. If you can hold out for another few months, the GPU market might see some interesting products.

 

As for buyer's remorse: Depends on what gives you more remorse, over-spending to be an early-adopter, or not getting the shiny new features before everyone else. I think the general consensus is that ray tracing is still too new to have that be the feature for the basis on GPU purchase.

That's why for me, the RTX is something that I'll never switch on, I don't want perfomance drop for a bit of brigthy brighty.

With that stuff said. I am on the fence if the bigger and better coolers are even worth it for either card.

 

My go to is really just to not get the stock cooler for 5700XT, but I know founders edition RTX 2070S is pretty solid.

I qwouldnt go stock cooler on 5700xt as it isnt that good.

 

the RTX 2070S FE is a good card and cheaper then the Strix

 

I have a strix setup and upgraded from a strix 1070 ti to the 2070s FE. 

 

I do like the looks but for the price difference.. it wasnt worth it

Better temps aren't always the main draw, it's often noise. If you watch HardwareUnboxed's reviews, they've done one for basically every 5700XT out there. They don't just mention the temps, they point out the fan speed. The better coolers will keep the cards at great temps with only 1400rpm or so, basically silent. IIRC the Gaming X from MSI is the best, the Red Dragon and Nitro + are incredibly close though. 

As for the 2070 Super, the FEs are fine (and IMO really nice looking), the better cards just offer nicer temps to let the card boost higher (GPU boost is highly temp dependant), and again can keep the same temps at a lower fanspeed and thus lower noise. 

If you don't give a crap about noise so long as it's under the max temps, good blowers are fine, just louder. That said, the 5700 XT doesn't really have a good blower, IMO it lets the card get much too hot (you wanna avoid the 90s if at all possible). My Vega FE had an excellent blower, kept the GPU at 75C on stock voltages (Vega ships with basically max voltage as stock) with an aggressive fan profile, just got a bit loud. It was a good tone though, a lower pitched air whoosh so it wasn't noticeable at all with headphones, and not annoying without them.

That is only $410 USD on Amazon US right now. That would be such a steal honestly if it is one of the best.

Oh oof the Dragon is a seperate model, this is the Devil. Lemme see if I can find anything on that, I misread your OP. 

EDIT: I'm only seeing reviews on the Red Devil 5700 XT, only Red Dragon reviews are for the 5700 non-XT. I'll NEVER bought a reference AMD card, but, my 2070S is the FE haha.

The Red Dragon XT would be pretty great for $410 though that's for sure. I may also be tempted to get the STRIX for a little more.

 

There is a Zotac RTX 2070S though for $500 USD, which I feel like for the extra $40 on top of a higher end 5700 XT, that is worth the leap.

 

It's a hard decision!

Value or AMD optimized titles (especially well executed DX12 or any Vulkan titles), Radeon Image Sharpening (basically better DLSS) - 5700XT
RTX Ray-Tracing, improved NVENC encoder, CUDA, usually more stable drivers -  2070 Super

Both cards are excellent and you're not likely to regret either. 

If by Tomb Raider you mean Shadow of The Tomb Raider, that can do RTX Ray-Tracing for all that eye candy (and it's already gorgeous on my Radeon VII), but it will incur a performance hit.
