Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Hi, so I am using a ryzen 5 3400g and I only have 2×4gb 3200mhz ram and I want to upgrade to 16gb ram.Is it a bad idea to buy another 2×4gb 3200mhz ram and just insert them into the other 2 ram slots?

no it's not a bad idea, but that wont give you quad channel.

with that chip you cannot run quad channel memory. you can still populate all the ram slots on your motherboard, but it will just run 2 slots per channel, thus dual channel.

getting more RAM is almost always a good idea tho!

Yes, do that.

Quad channel RAM is different than dual channel.  Similar concepts but using 4 sticks in a consumer PC isn't Quad channel, it's just dual channel still.

Okay so by me using all 4 ram slots it wont decrease performance but only enhance it since I'll have a total of 16gb ram and not only 8gb?

yep, but your performance will only increase if you need the extra RAM. if you never really run out of RAM with 8Gigs then going to 16 won't make that big of a difference

performance just doesn't change until the 8GB setup runs out of memory, then 16GB will have the edge.
