I would like to get the gtx 1660ti for a build. This card has 6gb of VRAM. I am not sure if that is enough or if I should get more. If I run all of my games at 1080p will 6gb be enough?

Yes, for the next year. 2-3 years down the line though? No, it will begin to drop frames. Not a huge amount but it'll be there. If you've got a decent psu, get the vega 56 on a good price. You can usually find them in between the prices of the 1660ti and 2060. Vega has 8gb and HBCC to back that up, so it'll last as long as the performance will allow it to last. The 1660ti will struggle in the future because games are already reaching 4-5gb at 1080p. A 1660ti will last as long as it's vram will allow it to last. It's a strong card but the vram will hold it back in 2-3 years time.

 

If you can pay a bit more for vega 56, I urge you to do so. It is worth it. It is by far the best option in that price range as long as you have a decent power supply.

Well, it will mostly depend on your CPU too, i've been using a 1080p monitor with my 5820K + 1070 and some games would still tank into 40's (SotTR, watchdogs 2, Metro Exodus, etc.) when maxed out. I remember having to cut antialiasing and some forms VXAO and other highly taxing option and toggles.

 

To be honest, the whole idea of "overkill" for a certain resolution is not a thing at all. I'd buy the best i could afford while mantaining a balanced configuration (please dont pair a 2080 with a quadcore i5).

As a side note, I don't remember many games that would use 6 or more GB of VRAM. There are some though, Apex wont let you max settings if you don't have at least 8GB of VRAM as an example. But, thats nothing to loose your head over imho.

 

TL;DR. Yes it's enough, but it's not compromise-free.

The rx 580 is a better value option but the 590 isn't awful (It used to be at a crazy price but they've toned it down since then). Also bare in mind that the 1660ti does not come with any free games whereas the 590 does. And the 590 also has 8gb vram, but it's not a huge deal down at that performance level. It could be beneficial in the next few years though. If you are interested in The Division 2, Devil May Cry 5 and Resident Evil 2, get the 590. If you're not interested in the games then get the 1660ti. I should also mention though that vega 56 also comes with 3 free games, so that's another reason to add to why you'd pay a bit more for it.

 

I would say that other than the rx 570, vega 56 right now is the best option on the market.

GTX 1660 Ti is of bad value, the GTX 1660 can be overclocked to match it and on the GTX 1660 Ti price point you can go for a Vega 56 or save a bit more for a RTX 2060.

 

VRAM wise though 6gb is more than enough for 1080p

Most reviews tend to be negative so it's not always an indicator of how bad or good it is. That card does apparently have minor issues with thermals, but it's nothing big to worry about. At that sort of price it's too good to avoid. As long as you're not overclocking you'll be perfectly fine.

It's not anywhere near as good value, but it's still good value.

It's not anywhere near as good value, but it's still good value.

Defo would try and get the red dragon, from what I've heard the Gigabyte Vega cards have issues. The Powercolor card is the one the bois over at GamersNexus OCed to compete with a 2070: 

 

so it should be pretty dank with a normal power target (they used a registry hack to give it 272% vs the normal +20%).

Yes that's fine. The price for the ryzen 7 2700 has come down a lot in the past few weeks, so that's an option too if you prefer the extra cores.
