[Tech-Support] Wi-Fi Conundrum

I have an, what my google search results show, unique problem. I seem to have extremely slow internet over Wi-Fi. This is only the case when trying to access the internet and not when transferring data between computers on my local Wi-Fi.

Locally i get wireless transfer speeds of up to 5MB/s (Old router, wireless n)

Externally, Speedtest.net shows 8MBit/s i.e. 1MB/s.

If i however use ethernet, the story is completely different..

Locally i get wired transfer speeds of up to 70MB/s (Gigabit, Cat5e)

Externally, Speedtest.net shows 90MBit/s i.e. 11MB/s.

 

This problem is persistent across multiple routers.

 

I have no clue as to why this is happening, and i just started this week after i got home an powered up my router. The problem has never been present before.

If any of you know what might be causing this, feel free to let me know... There is nothing more annoying than slow Wi-Fi :/

 

Extra Info:

Router - Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH, using DD-WRT & D-Link DIR-652 

Laptop - Lenovo Yoga Pro 2

Phone - Oneplus 3

Desktop Motherboard - ASUS Prime Z370-P

Ethernet Cables - Category 5e

 

I also does not seem to be able to ping my desktop from my laptop, or use samba from my laptop (or phone) to my wired NAS. Don't know if this is relevant, but wanted to mention it.

Is your house made of cement? Do you live by something that would be causing a ton of noise. Is it your wireless adapter

Just keeping this here as a Wireless N is not that old.

How's the signal, what is the rated speed in adapter status?

5MB/s is about 40mbps, i think it's normal if the rated speed is 72mbps.

You maybe running in 20mhz control channel width which limit the rated speed to 72mbps for legacy compability.

You can turn it to 40mhz for max speed rating.

The channel width has always been set to dynamic. This is true for both of the routers i tested.

 

The internal speed is what i expect from my router. It is the "external" i have a problem with, i.e. when i access the internet.

I have also tried changing the channel away from auto and manually tuning it to the least congested channel to avail.

The router is just next to my laptop. I live in a one room apartment, so no walls. The wireless adapter should not be the problem, unless both my laptop and my phone failed at the same time :).

I don't know if noise is a factor, if the internal wireless network is working as expected.

No i mean set it to 40mhz. In my experience the router will defaulted to 20mhz even if set to Auto.

If you're not using any legacy wifi devices like wifi-g, just set it to 40mhz.

It is now set to 40mhz.

When connecting to the WiFi at my university it is significantly faster. It should not be the adapter

Update:

Changing the channel width significantly increased the internet connection speed. Still not good, but i get 22Mbit/s now and upload is now normal 50Mbit/s. This is only true however on my laptop and not on my oneplus 3.

DDWRT said the phone was running legacy so i tried switching to N-only, but this cut my speed on all devices again. I still don't get why my internal speed is fine, but my external is bad (While LAN is solid all the time).

Why you have 2 router, which one is the main router?

The other one is just a spare. I changed them around when it didn't work at first, but the problem persisted. I even tried using one a DCHP and one as wifi, but that didn't work either

The adapter is working as it should. The problem is persistent through multiple wireless devices and when changing routers. There is no problem when using other networks.

 

The problem is only when connecting from wifi to the internet. Not when connecting from wifi to another pic on the same network
