I know jack shit about fans. Suggestions??

Kgonepostl

I'm looking for some reliable fans that push air, are relatively $10 or so apiece, can be placed horizontally. I just realized that I forgot to put one 120mm/140mm fan on the top of my case, and two 120mm/140mm fans on the bottom. This should help my cooling problem I've been having with my reference style vega 64. From what I understand some fan types shouldn't be placed horizontally. I-don't-mind-noise-at-all. My computer sounds like a jet engine with everything maxed to 100% fan speed while folding, it doesn't bother me. I'm sorry, I don't know dick about fans, they bore me personally. Suggestions?

tl;dr
Fractal Define R6 case. I have room for one 120mm/140mm at the top, and two 120mm/140mm on the bottom. Looking for reliable, decent fans for around $10 apiece.

Would anybody mind sending me in the right direction? I can provide more information if needed. I just need to know what to provide, since I'm pretty clueless about fans in general. I'll do all the leg work I can.  Thank you. ?

NF-P14S are great: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/8r9KHx/noctua-case-fan-nfp14sredux1500pwm

A single fan at bottom intake and top exhaust should be plenty.

Oh wow, those have great reviews. Thank you so much. I'm always looking to learn more. Why are those fans good? Also, I see that you mentioned that one fan is plenty on the bottom. I should have mentioned that I am folding with two GPU's. One undervolted/overclocked blower design Vega 64 from XFX, and I also have a EVGA sc2 gaming 1080 ti (not overclocked). For the CPU I have a AIO 280mm RAD, water cooled, overclocked (4.0ghz) threadripper 1950x.

Everything is at 100% utilization while folding. My Fractal Define R6 is a great case, but I'm utilizing 2 GPU's and a CPU at 100% at all times. That being said. I need to pump as much cold air from the outside as possible, to assist my blower style GPU, which is barely overheating. The 1950x, and the 1080 ti are cooled just fine currently, but the damn blower style Vega 64 keeps resetting itself from being too hot!!  I hope these three 140mm fans can help breath some more air into my blower design vega 64. I only need like 3-5 more degrees C for it to stop choking. Do you think three of these will do it??

You can read about the fan's features here: https://noctua.at/en/nf-p14s-redux-1500-pwm

Basically, it's long-lasting, performs well, is quiet and reliably so over time, and has a long 6 year warranty.

My bad for being unclear -- I was referring to adding a fan at the bottom and a fan at the top. If you're using an AIO, a third exhaust can help exhaust heat more quickly.

Is the Vega 64 in the top or bottom slot?

The top card generally has a harder time being cooled since there's less air to use for cooling. Have you tried swapping the two cards to see if the temps improve?

I need a 120mm fan for the top. I just read the fractal r6 page, and it has room for three 120mm fans, or two 140mm fans. Got a suggestion for a 120mm at the top, with good airflow?? There's already two 120mm fans at the top. Unless if I'm interpreting that wrong. I'm pretty sure I can't fit a 140mm at the top for the last fan. Thank you so much for your help. No, I haven't swapped them, I'll do that right now!!

What the frick does "open layout" mean??

The R6 comes with 3x 140mm's. They're preinstalled at the front and rear of the case.

The case spec list is for compatibility. The top can support up to 3x 120mm, 2x 140mm, or 3x 140mm with the open layout.

Since you've only mentioned having a 280mm AIO, there shouldn't be any 120mm's unless you got them from elsewhere.

I'm not sure, radiator is strapped to the front, not the top. Lemme check.....I think they are 120mm fans.....................So you're saying my configuration would only work if I mounted the fans to the top of the case? I just can't do that. The fans have to be mounted inside the case.  So I guess I need a good 120mm fan for the top, since I already have two 120mm fans on the top (fractal). Correct?

No, that's not what I'm saying. Fans mounted at the top would be inside the case.

I'm sorry. I'm trying my best here. I used the two front fans that came preinstalled with the define r6 (fractal) and mounted them to the top...............so I guess I have two 140mm at the top..................which is the max 140mm I can use. Would a 120mm fit for the last fan?

Yezzir. It's a 280 rad. I'm using the fans for the RAD tthat came with the with the unit.  Which is a enermax tr4 liqtech II. Which appears to have two 140mm fans that I used on the RAD

You should able to fit another 120mm or 140mm with the case reconfigured to the "Open Layout" but it probably wouldn't make any noticeable difference in cooling.

The open layout moves the hdd cage and metal plate back.

Is the rad currently mounted to the front of the case? Mounting it at the top of the case for exhaust instead should help graphics card temps by moving heat from the cpu outside of the case.

Damn, so my current config is fucked since I have a few mechanicals installed.. The plan is to mount the radiator to the top with the included static pressure 140mm fans lncuded with the AIO and have the fan blowing hot air outside the case. Install three 120mm fans to the front as an intake. Two 140mm static pressure fans at the bottom. And have the back 140mm blowing air out the back?

Fans that came with the radiator appear to be "good" static pressure fans.

" The T.B.Pressure fan blades are a result of precision engineering calculating the shape and angles. The high pressure blades concentrate the airflow to the centre of the fan achieving a strong static pressure.
The frame is equipped with rubber pads to reduce the vibration and noise.
The Twister Bearing Technology, ensures silent operation and up to 160,000 hours MTBF. "

You can still install 2x 3.5" hdd's at the rear in the open layout.

Fractal-Design-Refine-R6-On-KitGuru-Moth

That being said, I don't think the open layout is necessary. What you have in mind should work with the normal layout. Make sure that your psu isn't too long for two 140mm's to fit at the bottom.

If you want to go with 3x 120mm's at the front instead of 2x 140m''s, you can save some money with some cheaper fans.

Magma Advance for a bit more performance: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/kFBv6h/enermax-case-fan-ucmaa12a

or Slipstreams for lower noise: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/kP2kcf/scythe-case-fan-sy1225sl12sh

You can use the stock GP-14 X2's for bottom intake.

Nah, still  isn't going to work. I have 3x 3.5 mechanicals, and looking at that setup, it's just not gonna work. Gonna need the drive cages, unless I'm missing something not so obvious. My power supply is a seasonic focus plus drive. It's only 140mm deep. Should be fine. Right??

Ok, before I go to work buying all this shit, and re-arranging everything (I'm a putz). Here we go:

280mm radiator mounted to the top of the case, included AIO fans mounted to the bottom of the radiator, sucking up air from inside the case, and blowing through, and out the top of the case. Three ENERMAX MAGMA 120mm fans on the front, sucking in cold air through the front, into the case. Just leave the included fractal 140mm fan as an exhaust, as it is. And use the included two Fractal 140mm static pressure fans at the bottom, and have it sucking air in through the bottom??

Yep, looks good.

You should also try swapping the graphics cards first if possible.

Yep. If you don't mind spending a bit more for lower noise and longevity, NF-P12's are also excellent: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/VNBTwP/noctua-nf-p12-redux-1700-pwm-708-cfm-120mm-fan-nf-p12-redux-1700-pwm

Noctua fans are amazing, incredibly high quality and they perform damn well too. BeQuiet's SilentWings 3 fans are also amazing in my experience, built well and very quiet.

Ya dude, I would, but I already have two static pressure fans I'm gonna use for the bottom. They came with the case. I'm gonna put them in the bottom I think. Fractal Design Dynamic X2 GP-14 140mm fans I currently have good enough for the bottom?? Also, the Noctua NF-P12's are literally only a couple bucks more than the ENERMAX MAGMA's, and seem to have better reviews. Go with the Noctua? 1700rpm seems like a lot. Which seems good...........idk.
