  1. Alright, so i've been running Pihole for a few weeks now, and i absolutely love it! I can definitely recommend it to anyone who has a spare rPi laying about. Personally, i've been using a Raspberry Pi 3B+. it's a bit overkill for just a DNS sinkhole, but atleast it won't run hot and i finally have a permanent usecase for this thing. The only problem i had was mounting. i previously just had it laying on top of my rack. (this is an older pic, please ignore the AP just laying there, it's been ceiling mounted since! this looks pretty jank tough, and my cat would constantly knock it off there so it would just hang off of the USB/ethernet cable. How would you mount a Pi in a 19" server rack tho? spacing out an entire U for just a Pi seems a bit overkill, and it's not like there is rackmount hardware available. Atleast, not if you don't own a 3D printer that is. Now in the top U of my rack there's my router. it's a Mikrotik RB2011 UiAS-RM. and inside, its just a tiny little board and lots of empty space. Perfect for a Pi! now that just leaves the cables. sadly, my router doesn't have any internal connectors. so i have to route cables into the enclosure somehow. lucky for me, the Mikrotik has some ventilation holes cut into the front. perfect for routing a cable through! i just had to make sure to pass the cable through the hole before crimping on the second connector. otherwise passing it through there would be a real challenge. the router also has a USB port in the front, which i used to power the Pi in the same way the eth cable comes into the box. i originally wanted to use the PoE of this router to power the Pi, but Mikrotik uses some weird proprietary PoE standard, and none of the PoE HATS i used ever worked with this. So regular old USB it is i guess. and here's the finished product! definitely looks a lot cleaner than just a little PCB on top of the rack. and if it wasn't for the cables, you wouldn't ever know there was a Pi running PiHole in there! excuse the lower-light photo, my cheapo Xiaomi phone doesn't handle those very well.
  2. So I've got a Dell Powerconnect 2848 that does exactly what I need, but I am bothered by one thing: I replaced the stock delta fans (loud) with Noctua 40x10 12v fans. They work, BUT the switch complains in the console with: >FAN #1 IN NON-FUNCTIONAL STATE - REPLACE >FAN #2 IN NON-FUNCTIONAL STATE - REPLACE And the fan light on the front flashes red and green constantly, which again states a failed fan. It's been running fine and has not gone above operating temp for multiple days at near max load. Here's my plan: Add resistance to the voltage line on the Noctua fan so that the switch thinks it's got the delta fan plugged in and stops complaining. Thoughts?
  3. I would like to build myself a new (quiet) VM/container (Proxmox) server. Some requirements: - As low as possible on power - Capable to run ultiple VM's and containers in Proxmox withcout any compromises - Enough storage for all the VM's (the more the better ) - As cheap as possible - Rack case - I live in Belgium so old enterprise hardware is not that much available here... I am planning on building a second node, I currently have a server running with 1 running Windows Server 2019 VM, 1 pfsense VM and 5 Containers. The Virtual Machines are relatively slow, specs will be listed below! I would want to have at least 2-3 windows VM instances running with no hassle what so ever, but also have the containers running with no issues. Type of vms: - Windows server VM - windows 7 vm (for testing) - Windows vista VM (for testing) Type of CT (containers): - Webserver + database server - gitlab server - gitlab runner server - FiveM (game) server, for testing and development - Independant Database server - Plex media server (needs storage) Specs of my current server: CPU(s) 8 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5405 @ 2.00GHz (2 Sockets) 8x 2GB DDR2 FB-DIMM 667 MT/s RAM 6x 68.3 GiB HDD's (2.5") 2x redundant PSU (700 WATT each) So my current load, when I start up all of my CT's and VM's is the following; https://i.imgur.com/C8VDXDB.png And yes, that's idle.... (8 containers and 2 VM's) Anyone here who maybe can help me out finding the right parts? I'd like to have this build in a server rack case
  4. Hi. So far, I stacked a lot of stuff into a piece of furniture that was litterally a leftover extra unit of kitchen construction from the people who were living before where I live now. And after 3years, it started to sloooooowly give up. The side of it is, month after month, creeping away to the side, leaving the bottom plate. This "thing" (with my pitiful attempt at "trying" to do something to at least be able to sleep last night and stress a little bit less) is actually where are: -my two storage and virtualization server -my fiber router -my U4 workstation&maincomputer and it's on top of it that are stored a screen, keyboard and KVM switch + loads of spare parts... So, here I am... looking for a rack cabinet between 15 and 18U, deep enough to take in a R720, the cheapest possible that can be delievered in France/EU. I'm quite sick of messaging every marketplace seller asking how deep of a server we can fit in their advertised "600mm deep" cabinet, and be told that the rails are so pushed back that only 45mm deep servers would fit, or that the back panel isn't removable, or only to be never answered. And yeah, I know officially Dell wants 75cm of rack depth and stuff, but aint got that kind of money and this R720 is gonna sit on the bottom like a naughty boy on top of the UPS units. I mean, if someone there knows which brand/place/vendor sells cheapo deep 15 to 18U rack cabinets with non-stellar shipping costs in EU, it would be awesome. That old kitchen cabinet is painfully slowly dislocating.
  5. Hey all, so I need help with a project my wife's parents are looking at doing. In short, they are building a new home and want the following: IP cameras inside and out (wired) - at least 10 Remote door-unlock after viewing camera At least 2x wired ethernet ports in each room (lets say 10 rooms) Ability to view cameras from tablet + wall-mount touch-screen NAS to store everything they have, including movies and TV shows (at least 40TB usable space) PLEX server to watch their stuff, anywhere in the house + while on the move NVR to store / manage IP camera feeds Ability to have home-automation in the future (I don't know about this stuff) I'm meeting with them next week to get their actual requirements, but so far I'm thinking I'll need the following (and help with: PoE managed switch for IP cameras (24 port cat6) - but which one? IP cameras - but which ones? I don't want to pay any monthly fees / use their online solution NVR software - maybe ZoneMinder? NAS - but which one? Managed switch for home network (24 port cat6a) - but which one? Router - but which one? Patch panels - one for cat6 and one for cat6a - Ideally feed-through as opposed to punch-down 18RU wall-mount rack - but which one? 1RU rack-mount server (maybe an old DL360 G8?) - no idea about server grade hardware / software though Hypervisor - proxmox? Ability to have RAID 6 on 1RU server, or something so I can hot-swap in HDDs when they fail Touch-screen tablet thingy for use in kitchen to view stuff Other things i've not yet thought of The overarching aspects are: No paying monthly fees to anyone All OpenSource if possible Easy to maintain - i'll do the install and config and then hopefully annual maintenance only :) Cheap, but good quality stuff is more important I'm hoping people here can help me shape what I need to do. Thank you if you're able to assist :)
  6. Hi all, I have to build a computer for my lab at work. we need as many PCIe slots as we can get. The motherboard should fit in a 19 inch rack mount pc case. Also we would like to have two hard-drives to run it in a RAID configuration for data collection and an SSD drive for booting. And if you can suggest a case for the new computer too that will be great. For the CPU we need it to be fast, preferable not less than 4-cores, and what kind of RAM will be compatible with it. for now we don't require a GPU money is not a problem, go wild Thanks a lot.
  7. Hello, I'm looking for a motherboard which supports 6+ (dual slot) GPUs for i9-9900K/Ryzen 9/Threadripper 2/XEON. I wont use those GPUs for cryptomining. I'll be running virtual machines with GPU passthrough to 3 macOS VMs and 3 Windows VMs (plus 1-2 Linux VMs if I can find a motherboard which supports so many GPUs. All those GPUs as well as CPU will be liquid cooled with 1 liquid cooling circuit for 4 GPUs and 1 liquid cooling circuit for 2-3 GPUs & CPU. System will be rack mounted in a 5U for better cooling. I know that those are expensive as hell.
  8. Hey folks! Been a while since I've needed some guidance on tech, so I came to the best of the best (that's y'all). I'm in the preliminary stages of building a home server and I want to dig ideas for an aesthetic. I'd like a wide variety of different designs, so go ahead and flood this post with anything and everything. Mini ITX or Micro ATX will "probably" be the board of choice, but that's up in the air. Could be 1U or bigger ... no dimensions are off-limits. Let's see what y'all got! Thank you in advance to everyone who contributes. You're all breathtaking. ~ J
  9. Hi everyone! I own a photography studio and we started redecorating lately, so I have been thinking about moving my servers from a random room in the house to my office, which should improve a few things on my workflow. Long story short, to match the design of the studio I decided to use a piece of furniture as the rack, instead of my default black frame ugly looking thing. But I have doubts about airflow and heat dissipation. This is the furniture my wife and I have in mind for the office, except for the door, which will be removed: https://i.imgur.com/QB2rVU4.jpg I will get a friend's company to build me a few U4 cases to cover the servers, two editing servers running Vega 64 in crossfire plus a Threadripper 1950X each, plus four storage servers running Ryzen 3 and a network switch. AMD hardware is not known for being cold, so you get why heat is a concern here. The ideas I have for the server cases is something like this: https://i.imgur.com/L33gFRs.jpg https://i.imgur.com/L33gFRs.jpg So three to four fans throwing cold air inside the case, and three to four removing air on the back of the case. As I live in a city with good weather (20C in average), I believe that will be enough to handle everything. But I recently got my hands on two server rack fan enclosures, and I think those could come handy, what do you guys think? https://i.imgur.com/7HhKYsa.jpg Any idea on how I could use those to increase heat dissipation? I think the case fans will take care of everything, but I prefer to have more just in case. Maybe have the fan enclosure on the bottom, with holes in the case for the hot air to come out? So cold air would come in front and leave on the back and bottom of the case. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance! And sorry if this is all a little confusing.
  10. Hello Linus et al, I was hoping LTT would do a video/series to show us how they organize and store their equipment, track it, etc. We struggle with optimizing space for racks, carts, and workbench. Thank you! Sandy
  11. From the album: virtual server build

  12. Hey everybody. I configured a computer meant for a rack case. I don't have a case in mind yet, so I wanted to ask if you guys have suggestions. It needs to be able to fit some sort of AIO water cooler or similar for under 250$ bucks to cool the 800MHz overclock on the 6800K. This is the PCPP link. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/f4xGRG Any suggestions for coolers and cases welcome. Case should be around 250$. TY, Lu
  13. Hello! Im planning a new build of a CAD-Workstation and Gaming-Rig. But even before I decide on the Graphics (will probably get a workstation card and a gaming card), RAM etc, I like to choose a case. I'm searching for a rack-mounted case, which means I'm searching for a 4U Server case. I like to have as much airflow as possible, something like 2-3 120mm fans on the front and a few 80mm on the back. It should fit an ATX-board and 2 GPUs, as well as a decent power supply and an SSD (no HDD required). I'm also thinking about using a AIO-Watercooler with Rad, but I'm not sure to this date if it's worth it. Do you have any suggestions for a 19" case? I think 4U is standard (to fit the GPUs), the second thing is the depth, I like it as short as possible, max. 500mm if possible. I found this one (ROSEWILL RSV-R4000): https://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-Server-Chassis-Rackmount-Metal/dp/B0055EV30W?tag=linus21-20 But here, there are only two 120mm fans on the front and it's slightly longer (depth). If I go with the one with three fans on the front, the case depth increases even more. Another one is this one (NORCO RPC 431): http://www.norcotek.com/product/rpc-431/ But here I don't know if it isn't too short for all the stuff I like to put in. This one seems interesting too (ADVANTECH IPC 631): http://www.advantech.com/products/1-2jkd4b/ipc-631/mod_4088ba6f-9779-4901-9620-16ffa2143ce1 But there are only small ventilation cut-outs, so I think this won't work... right? I previously owned the ARK 4U-500-CA (https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811182566&cm_re=ark_case_4u-_-11-182-566-_-Product), which was nice, but I like to have more ventilation upgradability, when I plan this new build Thanks in advance! Manu
  14. Hey all For my home setup, I'm looking to move my FreeNAS box to a rack mounted solution. However, as I'm strapped for space in my garage, I'd ideally like to mount the thing in a wall mounted rack. Since those are fairly limited in space, I'm looking for short depth solutions. The twist that complicates my search a little more: I'm in Belgium, Europe. So getting hold of something like the Norco Tek RPC-4308 is turning out to be a little more difficult than I thought. Anyone around here able to point me to other case manufacturers that make something similar, that's hopefully available here? I found this similar one which I could buy from the UK, but have never heard of it, nor seem to be able to find reviews.
  15. Protocase: http://protocase.com Amazon: http://geni.us/2W2w NCIX: http://bit.ly/1QVlFEm When I reached out to Protocase about creating a custom, rackmountable case for my personal PC, I DID not think I would be this blown away with the final product...
  16. I planning to make a DIY server rack that can do almost anything I can throw at it. Its going to be consist of two computers both of which are in 4U server case in a 12U server rack that I'll make from scrach. One of the 4U computer is going to running Window 8.1 or maybe Window 9 when it comes out. This computer is primarly going to run Steam In-home Streaming that will run all my games in my Steam library (non Steam app included), to any computer on my home network. The specs of this computer is: Intel I7 2700k @3.5Ghz 16 GB of RAM (maybe more) AMD R9 280X 750 Watt 80+ Gold PSU from XFX and a 128GB SSD The rest of the storage for games will come from my Home Server or from a 2TB internal HDD Note: This computer is going to be referbished from my first battlestation that I'm still using to this day, just upgrading my GPU and maybe network. The next computer is going to a Home Server that is going to run Ubuntu Server or maybe FreeNas in a 2 or 4U case. Specs for this computer is: Intel Pentium 4 @3.0Ghz 4 GB of RAM 4 or 8 port RAID card from LSI or equvient manufacture 750 Watt 80+ Gold PSU 4 or 8 2 or 4TB HDD in RAID 5 or 6 Extra ethernet PCI card (Teaming maybe supported) Note: This computer is also going to be refurbished from another computer. The overall goal of this project is to have a "single" compute system that can be somewhat "portable" so I can take it to a university and play "real" games and off load projects from a Macbook Pro retina 13 inch. NO APPLE HATERS PLEASE.
  17. So with the current Steam Machine craze, I decided to think out side the box ( see what I did there ) so here is the craziness. This is meant to take advantage of Steam's in home streaming. I could put tech names but these are just gonna be casual description and links so you guys can look at it: So here is what i'm starting out with. A PNY 512 MB 9800GT Power Edition, 2 x 2 Gb 1333 DDR3 SO-DIMM ram, 2.5" 120Gb 5400 rpm cannibalized laptop hard drive. It's basically a M-ITX board with a celeron 847 soldered to the board. This is a 1U server case with an 80 plus bronze 200 watt power supply. PCI Express riser card is needed because the full length slot is horizontal in the back. Since the case doesn't come with any fans, I was thinking I might need a bit of air flow ( sarcasm ) so i'm gonna get 2 or 3 of these. So what do you think. Any feedback would be great.
  18. Before I start: 1. honestly I wish there was or there will be an episode from Linus about Racks. Not as fast as possible but as slow as possible with great details! Oh please!!! 2. Sorry if I am on the wrong forum but I didn't find a proper category and 3. Sorry if my English are so and so. Hi everyone I am new to the “rack concept” trying to understand basically the standards of width height and depth. What I know: The only real standard is the Unit measurement. 1U = 44mm. And that’s it. From that point everyone can make a rack box / case with ANY depth or width. Or isn’t so? Well wiki says that the standard width is 19Inches or 48,3cm for us with a different metric system mentioning that 19-inch dimension includes the edges, or "ears". All right this is easy so far. So I should be looking for rack nas / ups / server with a width of a 48,3cm? Should be easy. No? Whats the issue? The Synology RackStation RS816 NAS Rack (1U) has a width of 430,5 mm (about 43cm). So not for me? (really interested on that device) The synology RackStation RS18017xs+ has a width of 482 mm (about 48cm). Another size? (It's an example. I don’t have that much money lol) And lets take a look at a UPS APC SMX1500RM2U has a width of 432mm. Well OK as 816 since its only 2mm difference. And a Rosewill 4u Server Chassi is 16.8". (42cm?) Again another size? If we take as a fact that a few mm doesn't really matter we can see sizes from 420mm to 432mm. I don't know. Is this working with the standard 483mm? What’s the deal? How many standard widths are there? What am I looking at?
  19. Hey all, Quite new to server building - got myself a cheap preowned rack which is the same as the following... ( http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=CHADNX1802 ) So its only 600x600mm and im not sure about the width of the rails and the like. Preowned enterprise servers like HP DL360's are pretty cheap but seem to be too long for this rack. Any ideas? P.S Im from New Zealand so anything local would be great! Many thanks Ayrton
  20. Hi LTT Community! I was wondering what you all thought on DIY Server Rack. I did a search and no one has said this before, correctly if I am wrong, sorry. To save buying an expensive Server Rack would I been a good idea to build one out of some strong wood, paint it and either make holes in that for the servers or to get some rails? Thanks Max
  21. What rack brand/model is shown on these pictures? The blanking panels with handles is what caught my attention. (I'm aware that the handles most likely are for esthetics only) Hoped the IT guys would know. Original pictures on their website, customer service did not know. https://www.ubnt.com/unifi-routing/unifi-security-gateway-pro-4/ https://www.ubnt.com/unifi-switching/unifi-switch-16-150w/
  22. Hi, I am working on buying my own server rack to fit in my switch, NAS etc. I am searching for a server cabinet which is max 350mm in height and 550mm deep. Because the closet door is fixed on top of my closet the cabinet door must have 15mm space at the top-side. I would like it to be an 6U so I would be able to fit in three units and still be able to place my NAS (Synology DS1515+) on the bottom. Most 6U cabinets I find are 368mm in height and will nog fit my closet. Any suggestions or brilliant ideas over here? I don't have a huge budget btw. Regards Patrick
  23. Not sure if this would be the right place to post this. I have a 2 post 12u rack I use for my home lab equipment. The rack is slanted at an angle, here is an example: https://goo.gl/images/8BTHcp I have been looking for an angled shelf for some of my equipment, but haven’t been able to find one that is angled so that the shelf is laying horizontal (not angled) once installed. Does anyone know where I might be able to find one? Thank you
  24. Just wanted to show off a couple of my racks that we use at the production company. and my 48c board. the first image (labeled rack 1) is what i use for most of our shows now. from top to bottom it consists of the following. power conditioner shure antenna and power distribution unit shure recievers bbe sonic maximizer behringer 8024 dsp presonus rm32ai main amp monitor amp the second image (labled rack 2) is how we used to run our main rack when we were using analog gear. power conditioner bbe sonic maximizer behringer 8024 dsp pra-8 preamp presonus firepod' alesis compressor presonus acp88 compressor/gate/limiter/expander antares atr-1 autotune (only ever used it once. more of a novelty) digitech studioquad patchbay splitter snake that board is the old mackie. we no longer use that at all. it was trash. the 3rd image (labeled yamahaconsole1) I included just for fun, this is my yamaha m3000a 40c. it is a 48 channel analog board and was the first soundboard to have any digital features, its fairly worthless but i collect boards so i have 15 or 20 this is just my newest addition. feel free to ask any questions in the comments.
