Hey everyone! I've got a homelab with 4 DC's and a handful of Servers and VM's. 3 of 4 are 2016 or 2019, but I have one legacy 2008R2 that I use. I'd prefer not to have it open to the internet since it's EOL and not receiving any updates. I prefer 2008R2 and want to keep one until Microsoft completely kills it off (I've got Windows 7 VM's in the same boat). I've gone the easy route of setting a GPO in AD called "Legacy Windows 7 or Older" to set Domain Firewall rules to block Incoming and Outgoing port 80 packets. I'd turn off Windows Firewall to manually grab definition updates and Chrome updates for my internal uses. Is there a better way to have traffic shaping setup? I'd like to have ALL programs blocked unless they are MSE or Immunity. I'm also open to other Windows Server free Antivirus. Hopefully that makes sense... Thank you!

Linus recently reviewed the Framework laptop and stated in a later episode that he was so impressed that he invested in the project. I absolutely agree that this is a valuable project and that it deserves to win. As I travel frequently and do all my work on the road, an expandable laptop like the Framework is ideal for my needs. It is also the ideal size, at 13." A 15" is too large for all the places I need to use it, which is sometimes a hostel-bed in a far corner of the world. I do have some features I'd like to see and I'd like to run it by the forum, before I contact framework with a feature request. What I'd like to see added to the Framework laptop, on later models, is a second internal ssd. I know that you can add a second ssd module on usb; but, this tends to be slow during cloning, which is the exclusive method I use for data backups. I use clonezilla, on a usb-stick for this. All of my systems (laptops exclusively) are multiboot. My current system has Windows 10, debian Buster and Ubuntu. When I have a system with 2-ssd slots, I use the second for "internal" backup, which is bunches faster than hanging the backup drive on a usb port and doesn't require the external drive at all. I used to clone drive to drive (bare-metal); but, I currently only save the image to the backup drive. I'm completely confident in this methodology and clonezilla for this. While the scenario I described is convenient, it leaves something to be desired. A more ideal hardware configuration would be to have 4x internal ssd slots. Please allow me to explain, as there is madness to my method One thing I've learned multibooting is that Windows just won't play nice with other distros; so, it's best isolated on it's own drive, with my linux distros on a secondary system-drive. Also, internal b/u is so much faster and convenient than external b/u that it would be ideal for each system-drive to have it's own internal b/u drive, NVMe preferred, all around. With M.2 ssds (2280s) the form factor is small enough to accommodate this, even in a 12.6" unit. The b/u drives could be hibernated or electrically switched-off, when not in use. This could be done with switches or in the BIOS/UEFI firmware to save power. I imagine the b/u drives should be twice the size of the system-drives. For example, both the Windows 10 drive and the linux system drive can be 1TB, with their respective b/u drives being 2TB. This would allow the creation of an equal or better sized partition, to store b/u images; and a separate spare data partition, where the user might store his music, videos, games, etc. There might be several power mitigation strategies that could be handled at the BIOS or OS level, depending on whether the user wants one or both of the b/u drives to be completely off or just sleeping; so, that they're available on-standby, without rebooting and reconfiguring the firmware. I would also allow all four ssd slots to be configured as systems drives. As the system ages and accidents happen, this just might save the user's canadian-bacon some day, if a primary-slot fails. BTW, I love canadian-bacon. It's my favorite vegetable

Hi! Thanks for checking out my post. I'm currently looking for a very specific type of SSD. My sister has an old junk laptop that has an unbearably slow HDD, and I would like to replace it with an SSD to make it faster. I also have plans to use this SSD in a computer I may build her (I will take it out of the laptop once it's been built). However, I'm kind of on a budget and I am looking for some specific specs. Here they are: I'm looking for something within the price range of $25 - $70. It has to be 480 - 500gb, and has to have a DRAM cache. It also has to be 2.5" (as I stated earlier, I'm putting this in a laptop). I would prefer for it to come from certified seller websites, such as Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy, Walmart, Staples, Office Depot, and/or B & H photo, but I may be open to sites like ebay or lazada. I know I'm asking for a lot, but any suggestions would help out a ton. I already did some research on SSDs with DRAM caches already, but I am not sure if any of them actually have caches, as I mostly got my answers from, "Questions asked," or "User Reviews" (sellers tend not to say too much about the DRAM cache on the product pagse/specs). Please let me know if the following specs are not possible for the price range. PS: Thanks to everyone who helps out, and I hope you have a great day. If anything I said above is conflicting, wrong, or something of the likes, please tell me - I am somewhat new to the tech community.

Hi Im building a small software riad for my increasing bluray backup (plus all other valuable data) the array will be built of 8tb HDDs, in a cooler master silencio 550 (i went to a fiar bit of effort to find a case with 5.25" bays as well as many hdd space). I have 2x 5.25 blueray drives and an 3rd 5.25" bay with an hotswap bay. Hdds go upto 18tb currently in the consumer space, i considered however that it may be useful to create an external parity drive for the array in the pc. The array will be running windows as my backup software will need to be run on this ofc and i dont understand enough about unraid or similiar things to worry about running containers and feeding the hdd space to it etc (seems too complex to worry about tbh) This is more a thought experiment atm but due to the fact that a single large drive is also very expensive- based on the fact the array is unlikely to be updated very often- could an drive be created for parity to keep in as an "external" spare to help rebuild the array should one drive fail? I know most of you will say nas or synology but i really dont need anything like a nas just a vault to protect my data and hold my bluray drives etc May also be worth mentioning this pc i will need to run headlessly which i will be looking into so any advice here would be great (no i dont want a subscription). Any thoughts on this would be welcome. Thanks alex

cd-rom Looking for internal optical disc readers (Blu-ray & DVDs)

Howdy, I am planning on making a optical disk tower and I need some recommendations of optical drives for Blu-Ray and DVDs + CD readers, too. I would like them internal and mid to high range quality that has good error correcting abilities. Thanks! -
Hello, I want to put in a HDD (2.5") into my Lenovo laptop and the laptop came with a cable and 4 screws to allow me to do so. But the problem I have is that the pictures of the HDD online that I am looking to buy all have a 4 pin socket next to the SATA connector. This means that the drive would need power (1.2 W for the model I'm interested in) and I don't have a dedicated cable for this. Also I don't understand how power delivery works inside a laptop. So does this mean I can only install a SSD drive?

Wondering if it is poosible to bend an internal usb 3.0 cable to hard and break it? I just got an extension for it in my pc and didn't have much room so i had to bend it to make the length right. Just curious if it is possible to break the cable by bending it to hard?

Hello LTT Comunnity, So basically I need to replace my laptop's (HP Omen 17-T) internal boot drive which is a SanDisk 128GB M.2 drive (see below) with a new compatible M.2 drive. I've been looking at the Crucial MX300 525GB M.2 (see below) but I need to know that my laptop will accept the new drive. I don't see why it wouldn't but I need reassurance before I drop the money to upgrade, if it isn't compatible can you provide a suitable replacement since I need a replacement ASAP. Preferably something in the 500GB range. 128GB Boot Drive - https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SD6SN1M-128G-1006-725333-001-22x80mm-Notebook/dp/B00S0O6BJ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1489549958&sr=8-1&keywords=SanDisk+SD8SNAT-128G-1006 Crucial MX300 525GB M.2 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L80DH4G/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=L5G0360HJ9HJ&coliid=I27DC51P7UZG1E&psc=1 Thanks, -DCN

I have an external 1tb HDD that I'm planning on converting into internal. My current HDD which is a slow 200gb Hitachi Travel star in currently in my build along side 2 ssds. Now the ssd's are filling up and I cant really use the Hitachi for storing applications, only for movies and stuff due to its slow speed. If I do convert my external HDD to internal I will then convert the Hitachi into the external and my Seagate external into internal. Here is the speed comparison where the top is the Hitachi 200gb and the bottom is the Seagate 1tb. The Hitachi is running off sata while the Seagate is running off usb 3.0. What do you guys recommend?

Over time, with space requirements increasing with each incarnation of software, I have accumulate a number of drives, both internal and external in 2.5" and 3.5" for factor. This is now really bugging me as it has inevitably led to a rats nest of data and power cables both inside my PC and with the USB and power socket cables coming from the 3.5" external enclosures. I am trying to try and consolidate these down to a single power socket and a single USB 3.0 cable. I know this could be done via a NAS or JBOD enclosures, but both these option for 8 bay solutions are, in my opinion, overpriced and out of my budget. This is why I am looking for a DIY solution. I assume that a SATA power cable for multiple devices that usually come with a power supply can somehow be merged to give 8 SATA power connectors and then connected to a single cable running to a single power socket to plug into the wall? Similarly, I assume there is maybe a way to split a single USB 3.0 cable into 8 separate SATA data connectors to connect to the drives, resulting in a single USB 3.0 cable to connect to a PC, though some kind of SATA controller may be needed somewhere in the equation?!?! However, I have no idea where to start with something like this and would appreciate suggestions, thoughts and advice.

best Best way to reset an internal drive to external
Asher Schwartz posted a topic in Storage Devices
What is the best way to reset an internal drive as an external. I swapped my HDD out for an SSD on this computer and I am just wondering the best way to reset the HDD to get the full potential back as one drive and not a couple of different volumes. -
I have a D-LINK DIR-850L router. My connection is 100 mbit up/down and I use the wireless connection at the moment. Whenever I test my internet speed I run at a steady 4 MB/s up- and download speed. However, when I transfer files to my backup drive (the model is a WD My Cloud), which is connected to the same router I upload and download at around 13 MB/s. Which is the internal network. The file is still transferred wirelessly. The lan connection gives me a stable 11/12 MB/s up- and download rate. So I know the router is capable of higher speeds than 4 MB/s. What is at fault here?

Hi, I've got an ASUS MAXIMUS VIII GENE mATX Motherboard and a PCIE Expansion Card (its a Lenovo BA7E78 PCIe Adapter). The strange thing is that the expansion card has an 11-pin USB connector to connect to the mobo. But the Motherboard has only 2 internal USB connectors, which are both 9 pin. How am I supposed to connect the 11pin-Plug into a 9 pin connector? Thanks in advance!

Would you A) build a self-contained loop inside the S340, with pump, radiators, reservoir, everything -The loop is more complex, but comes with an increased risk of leaks and potential failures. -More portable, since everything is inside the case. or B) put the radiators and pumps outside the case and have some quick disconnects, then just a CPU and a GPU waterblock inside the case -Very simple and clean, just 3 tubing routings. -More internal space since there are no rads or reservoirs or pumps inside the case. -Can use radiators as big as your heart desires since there is no size restriction. -Decreased risk of leaks inside the case, since there are only 2 waterblocks. Note: the case will be an S340, so I would be limiting myself to 120+280 area, which is "enough" for a CPU and GPU.

Looks like an issue on Youtube's side but I thought I'd bring it up nonetheless. I was trying to watch recent videos, but unfortunately I'm getting a 500 Internal Server Error on all the videos up to the first Office Makeover video. However, there was this huge block of text on the page, but I'm not sure where to send it. Maybe someone here can help? Hi there! Couple of months ago I posted a thread about multiple monitors and asked for a recommendation for more slot graphic cards. HERE And recently I realized that I could just use my internal graphics. So I looked up how to use internal and external graphics together and mostly found stuff like: "It depends on your MoBo and Graphics combo" or "Check your BIOS", which doesn't help much. So my question: Does anyone have an ASRock B95 Pro4 and an GTX 750TI and made it to use internal AND external graphics? And how? Thanks in advance Cedi

Unless I've missed some news somewhere along the line, SATA development is limited by the way it interacts with the CPU. USB has overtaken it for raw speed, so why are we still using SATA as our main drive interface for large numbers of drives? Scenarios exist where we need more speed than SATA in numerous SSD's in the same system. While NVME / PCI-E interfaces fill the gap for small numbers of very high speed drives it seems like a stop-gap while we wait for something better than SATA for traditional drive mounting. SAS can go faster but neither are specifically designed to leverage the design of solid state storage... Cabled NVME where massive PCI-E bandwidth is available? Imagine a connector where Linus can actually leverage the full performance of an array of high capacity SSD drives for a new high speed server project!! Discuss. Enlighten me

So, I was looking at storage for my new build and found something confusing. In the below pictures, an sshd(being cheaper) is shown faster than an SSD which is supposed to be faster. Is there any difference? Sshd. Ssd.

Hey all, So i'm getting pretty annoyed with my 120GB SSD being constantly full, and was looking to get a WD Blue or similar M.2 SSD around the 250GB/500GB mark, as my 2.5' bays are full, but i can't make heads or tails of whether or not my board supports it, On PC Part picker it tells me 2 SATA Ports are disabled to make way for M.2 (Someone here said #5 and #6 a few years back). Does it do this automagically? Do i have to fart about in BIOS to get it to work? Am I going to be getting the rated performance of the Drive after its set up? All help is appreciated The Drive im leaning to: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/External-Solid-State-Drives/WD-Internal-Solid-State-Drive/B01LY154MY/ref=sr_1_7?s=computers&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1502332369&sr=1-7&keywords=m.2%2Bssd&th=1 My Board: https://www.asus.com/ie/Motherboards/Z97K/

So what are people's thoughts on cooling, internal and external, which would people prefer and why ? would you rather have a external cooling ? if so do you, if not whats stopping you from an external cooling system ? just trying to work something out and see if people want external cooling and why there is a lack of it
