  1. Summary Intel is set to roll out its Xeon W-2400 and Xeon W-3400 series processors for HEDT (High-End Desktop) and extreme workstations on February 15th, with a supposed review embargo date of February 22nd. This will be Intel's first HEDT platform in more than 3 years, since X299 was launched in Q2 2017 and Cascade Lake-X being the last architecture to be launched in 2019. Intel will bring a new socket, Socket LGA4677 as well as a flagship CPU carrying 56 Golden Cove cores and 112 threads, dubbed Xeon W9-3495X. The W9-3495X will have a base clock of 1.90 GHz and a boost clock of 4.80 GHz. Expert Xeon W-3400 series will carry 112 PCIe lanes as well as 8 memory channels. Mainstream workstation Xeon W-2400 series will bring 24 cores and 48 threads, 64 PCIe lanes and remain with 4 memory channels. Review Embargo will be 22 Feb 2023 09:00AM PT. This is an important moment for Intel after AMD basically kicked Intel out of these markets with their Ryzen Threadripper CPUs. Quotes According to Wccftech, a embargo date of 15 Feb 2023 09:00AM PT, followed a week later by a review embargo on 22 Feb 2023 09:00AM PT will occur. Intel will be splitting the launch of the "Mainstream W2400" series and "Expert W3400" series. A brand new W790 motherboard will be launched as well. A Mainstream W3400 SKU series spec sheet has been posted as well, shown below. A Expert W2400 SKU series spec sheet has been posted as well, shown below. Enthusiasts will be pleased with the bump in core counts, unlocked multipliers and quad or octa-channel DDR5 memory support with TDP ranges of 110W to 350W. Prices are unknown at this time but are expected to be not cheap. W790 'Fishhawk Falls' Chipset Platform Intel's Xeon 2400 series and 3400 series CPUs will launch on a new platform, W790. Intel's new W790 chipset will provide 16 PCIe 4.0 lanes, up to 12 PCIe 3.0 lanes, up to 8 SATA ports, up to 5 USB3.2 Gen2x2 connections, up to 10 USB3.2 Gen2 ports, Wi-Fi 6E capabilities, and supports two 2.5GbE PHY controllers. A Leaked Motherboard: SuperMicro X13SWA-TF There has been a leaked motherboard that has surfaced online, the SuperMicro X13SWA-TF for LGA4677 processors that are codenamed Sapphire Rapids, confirming more of the leaks based on the new Xeon 2400 and Xeon 3400 CPUs mentioned above. Details emerged from the source, Chiphell. Also, a spec sheet for the motherboard is listed here. This motherboard appears to have 6 x16 slots, although for the "Mainstream" Xeon 2400 series, only 3 slots will be full speed directly from the CPU due to the # of PCIe lanes these processors carry. This motherboard alone is an E-ATX form factor, powered by a normal 24-pin and three 8-pin CPU EPS power. Projected Release Timeline: Q1 2023 The expected launch time of the new W790 chipset is Q1 2023, towards the end of March as the leaked sales embargo dates for the Xeon 2400 series and W790 chipset is 08 March to 22 March 2023. For the Xeon 3400 series, 12 April to 26 April 2023. My thoughts Phew!!! Probably one of the longest Tech News articles to write and will be updated throughout the launch period. I'm pretty excited to see Sapphire Rapids and most importantly, Intel, returning back to the HEDT lineup after no new launches since Cascade Lake-X back in 2019 on X299 platform. The W790 chipset appears to provide everything a workstation client will ever need, especially using the Xeon 3400 CPUs with up to 112 CPU PCIe lanes. DDR5 now being mainstream and an octa memory channel for the "Expert" lineup is as if Intel is moving into the spot that the Intel based Apple Mac Pro (2019) will take once Apple updates the Mac Pro to their own processors and finally move away from Intel. For the mainstream, Xeon 2400 series take the spot that the Core Extreme processor once had with X299. I'm afraid that they may price these processors too high and will be DOA, essentially leaving it up to the "Expert"/workstation to compete with Threadripper PRO and AMD. I'm excited to see where this goes. 2. Hello, I thought I bought "i9-7900X QS" at the ebay from chinese seller, but, both BIOS and Windows show as "i7-7900X. It appears to be Geniue Intel CPU, according to Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool, and passes all tests. However, both CPU-Z and HWiNFO64 show as "i9-7900X". Is this means i9-7900X planned to be launched as i7-7900X or something? Does anyone have informations about this SKU?
  3. Hey guys so I just paid for a Thread-ripper 1920x for my new gaming rig / server. this will be my interim gaming PC while I wait to get the rest of the parts for the actual gaming PC. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the 1920x or first gen thread-ripper in general. I have heard about reliability claims but for a price tag of $150 USD I couldn't say no.
  4. I've heard a fair bit about X299 boards sucking some royal ass, well some of them that is. So My question is, what are the some better boards that don't cause issues?
  5. Summary They have finally done it!!! MSI has decided to bring resizable bar, AMD's marketing for Smart Access Memory, to the HEDT platform. They will start rolling out new BIOS(s) starting with AMD's TRX40 Threadripper HEDT platform first, with plans on bringing resizable bar to Intel's HEDT, but with no information on when or what platform they will start with. MSI may bring SAM to Intel's HEDT when there is enough demand for this feature on the platform, presumably starting with X299 chipset motherboards. Quotes My thoughts I've been looking forward to resizable bar coming to the HEDT platform as it would not make sense to just have this feature on their mainstream/consumer platform for both AMD and Intel. I believe it would hurt both platforms if they did not bring this feature. I, myself, am looking forward to hopefully bring it to X299 to see if I can a performance boost that we already see on Intel's Z490 chipset platform. The gain's may be small but its free and have been included in the PCIe specifications for a long time in the server market. Source https://wccftech.com/msi-brings-resizable-bar-amd-smart-access-memory-support-to-hedt-platform/
  6. Intel has lost market share in the HEDT space, unless someone can correct me? Intel chips only support 20 pcie lens even the high-end 12900K but the 5950x supports 24 and thread ripper has some big numbers. I know today's hardware is a lot faster but at what tradeoff with lack of lanes to run accessories? When I first moved from a 8700k to a 7800x a lot of my stuff ran smoother and faster either from the lanes to run everything to the quad channel memory. I'm super hesitant to upgrade from my 9820X for lack of information on workstation performance. I guess my question is are they any team blue options that I'm not aware of that still has the features of workstation chips?
  7. Summary Intel is expected to launch its Raptor Lake desktop processors and the first Sapphire Rapids HEDT CPUs in October 2022 according to the well-known leaker Enthusiastic Citizen. Over at Bilibili the known leaker and reviewer Enthusiastic Citizen, now going by the name “ECSM_Official”, posted a rumored launch schedule for multiple Intel and AMD platforms for this year. Quotes My thoughts Looks like Fall/Autumn and even the Christmas season is going to be busy for computer hardware. Zen 4 is expected to launch during the same time frame as this; along with new GeForce, Radeon, and Arc video cards. Exciting times ahead if these rumors are to be true. It seems since desktop CPUs are coming with more cores and better motherboards; the market for HEDT platforms is steadily fading. Makes sense that this is the reason why Intel is pivoting their HEDT platform. As I imagine they are going to be a costly platform that even users interested in HEDT won't be able to muster. Ultimately, this info is grapevine, so its certainty is not guaranteed despite sounding credible. So as per usual, take it with a grain a salt. 8. The rumor claims that Intel will launch the W790 Workstation HEDT chipset in Q3 2022 alongside the 13th Generation Sapphire Rapids-X desktop series. If you know more news about this topic, please comment on this thread. I would like to test this chipset with Linux, and I would like to build a machine for audio capture (recording, mixing, mastering) and video capture (rendering), with sampling based on a time card (Open Compute Project). If you are a hardware manufacturer or an angel investor get ready! With or without your help I will build this machine offering it to the public as a modular flagship model based on the concept of outsourcing and the right to repair. Can you guess which operating system I will be using ??? Linux ... In order to further lower the total cost of ownership !!! It's a big challenge and I hope other parties have the courage to face it with me ... Antonio Bonaccorso
  9. Both AMD’s Threadripper and Intel’s Core X HEDT processors have been dormant for years now. But Intel’s Sapphire Rapids Xeon W is the spiritual successor, and hits AMD where they stopped competing.
  10. Hi All So this will be a build I'm looking at doing at some point within the next year after we've paid off our loans for renovating our apartment and the new AMD CPUs and Nvidia GPUs are out. I'd always been flipping between different build ideas but could never really decide on what I ultimately wanted to do as I felt like I would always be compromising in some way. The 2 builds I wanted were a "shit tonne of radiators with no fans" build following Linus' video, as well as a better version of the Lian Li DK04/05 which i liked but just weren't what I wanted, and were very expensive for what you got. As a side note they've kind of secretly made new versions which I believe went online within the past few days: http://www.lian-li.com/dk-05f So, it was evident from the start that combining the 2 would be nearly impossible as the weight of the radiators would be much too heavy for the desk, however, if I created a mount for the radiators on the bottom with soft tubing, I would mitigate all of that additional weight, which was where the current plan came into being. Here are some thoughts/requirements I had whilst creating: Standing desk: The maximum weight of a reasonably priced standing desk is 125kg. I asked various manufacturers whether I could buy 2x100kg (slightly cheaper than 125kg) capacity ones and have 1 control unit operate both sets of legs but they all said no. Does anyone know whether this might actually be possible with soldering the wires to split them? I had earlier revisions of the desk that were bigger and I preferred but unfortunately they ended up being around 150KG with everything considered such as arms, 1L drink etc being on it and I couldn't really trust it. I also had an earlier version where I used a riser for the GPU to keep the case slimmer. Whilst this would be fine for the moment as consumer GPUs don't saturate the gen 3 connection yet, I want to keep using this for a while, I don't know when gen 4 will be necessary and I don't want to recreate the entire desk because of a lack of suitable risers. As such I took the rough dimensions of the MSI Seahawk 2080ti as I believe this is the largest waterblock GPU available and built the height around this. I'd prefer to see the card in all honesty but it's a sacrifice I'm comfortable with. I'm not sure how I want to arrange the standing desk panel nor the power button currently. I don't want/need front panel IO as I have a Caldigit TS3+ thunderbolt dock (the little grey box under the main monitor) which handles any additional IO the MOBO can't accommodate, this was another reason I wanted the Aqua as it has thunderbolt. The standing desk control panel is just a small PSB with some cheap buttons on it. It would be fairly easy to create a new shroud/case for it and I'm thinking about having this under the main monitor to keep cables managed nicely. I personally think small aluminium box with the power and desk controls sitting there would look nice but again open for feedback! Aluminium extrusions/glass: The back on the desk uses 80mm aluminium extrusions (the rest of it is 40mm) to keep it more rigid but also give the monitor arms more surface to grip to rather than using the glass. I sunk the main desk area down compared to the 80mm extrusions at the back so that with 6mm glass and 5mm of rubber (to protect the glass) it would sit relatively flush. I'm not sure exactly how much the rubber will compress and I understand that the glass won't sit exactly flush but I'm sure it should be relatively ok. I already have the mousemat shown but I'm contemplating asking for a custom piece of glass in a U shape that will not cover the leg area so I can instead have something else that is lighter there and wrap it in neoprene to stop arms sticking to the glass. I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on this as I also want to still be able to see the computer when sitting. PC Components I'm looking at getting a (hopefully they do it) next gen equivalent of the x570 Aqua along with watercooled RAM and GPU. I want to keep everything pretty much as solid state as possible. I have a 1200w PSU already which will exhaust a slight amount of heat but wanting a board like that to keep most of the heat in the water and out of the "case". Ideally the only moving parts of the actual computer will be the pumps and the PSU. The monitor configuration will be the same as shown and what I have now but the monitors are different. I have a 4k 27" AOS on the right that I don't like the look of but does the job, a chunky Zowie 27" 240hz in the middle and a Dell (I think 1440p 24"?) on the right in portrait. I have an Area 51m currently so I actually have 4 screen but for work this 3 screen setup works well. For the watercooling, I was going to have 2 reservoir/pump combos to ensure there is enough pressure and at the very least, some redundancy. I'll put 2 passthroughs in the case base with soft tubing going into it from below so that the desk can go up and down with slack in the tubes. For the main case, I'll use rigid tubing of some description, maybe acrylic but I'll need to check the best mix of plastics to ensure no issues/discolouration. For the radiators at the bottom, I don't think I will actually affix these to the desk itself, just create a housing for them. In the housing I may put the reservoirs, to the side of it I will likely have a UPS (our apartment in Beijing as an annoying thing when to say you're low on electricity they will cut the power for a few seconds...) I haven't decided on how I will actually arrange the radiators yet. I imagine that putting them, all in front of my legs may get them hot so I might try and put half on each side and join them up. I'll be putting valve fittings between each of the radiators, I want maintenance to be a case of taking off the peripherals, remove the glass and open the valves. This way I can drain the entire loop exceedingly easily as gravity will do pretty much 100% of my work for me. Cable management I'm not 100% happy about having to run cables over the glass. I have an orbweaver, keyboard, mouse and headset that are all wired and I won't go wireless. I'm thinking about asking the glassmaker to cut a hole in part of it to run the cables underneath, I'm not sure this will be an option however! If not then I'll try to make the runs as clean as possible. I love the look but I am worried about wires. I want to try and avoid seeing any wires if I can which is why there is a cable management bar behinfd the main monitor. The mobo is raised up so I can hide cables here pretty easily. I haven't done custom cables before but think I will for this, I'm not sure if I will add some slack so that there is some leeway for new parts without having to completely redo everything. This is not a finished idea by any means, but certain aspects I really like such as trying to avoid panels (apart from the motherboard area) and keeping it quite industrial. Aside from the pictures I'll link below, I think that is pretty much it! I will post updates when this ends up being created (it's my main goal now!) and welcome any feedback people have, I'm sure there are lots of areas people could come up with better ideas etc
  11. I recently started thinking about updating my PC, I use it for gaming, Twitch and Youtube streaming, and video editing, so obviously intel extreme cpu came to my mind. I currently have i7 4790, 16gb 1600mhz and a G1 Sniper B6 mobo I started checking for good deals on 6800K with X99 mobo and some DDR4 ram and the prices are relatively high (even tho I can get the cpu cheap from a friend who works at intel) now I saw some articles about the new X299 chipset that should arrive later this year, and I started doubting my decision to get 6800K , my friends told me that entry cpu for the Skylake X cpu will not perfrom MUCH better than the 6800K, but I dont care about too much. given that money IS a factor (but not by much) and I dont expect a BIG difference in performance anyways, should I wait for new X299 or get X99 with 6800K on a discount?

Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/11464/intel-announces-skylakex-bringing-18core-hcc-silicon-to-consumers-for-1999 If you're looking for the strangely positioned X299 4 core parts I have another thread. Welcome to the era of 12 cores and 24 threads being 'low core count' I was skeptical about those high turbo speeds in the leaks but they appear to be true. These things are absolute monsters, compared to the 6950X which tubo-ed to 3.5ghz and 4.0ghz boost this is an 800mhz and 500mhz improvement on the equivalent 10 core part. I wonder what the turbo breakdown per number of active cores is. Shame to see that 40 lanes is only available starting at $1000, last gen it was $617 6850K to get the full 40. The old lineup Comparison with enthusiast Ryzen As people predicted the i7-7820K competes directly with the Ryzen 7 1800X The High-core-count chips Little official details on the 2 flagship chips, only prices announced so far. However going by the leaks being as accurate as they are... Anandtech notes that the silicon these top 3 are harvested from appears to be a 20 core die. A response to Threadripper? Kinda. Anandtech notes that Skylake-X was only ever expected to be up to 12 cores, however as the industry started to hear rumors of Threadripper Intel had to react. This is why the 2 HCC chips don't have finalised specifications. Intel is waiting for the Threadripper specs to drop. Show me the money (Cache) Intel have tweaked their cache hieracy again, this means that like Skylake-S (read i7-77xx) the L3 cache is reduced and L2 cache increased. The L3 now acts like a pseudo-victim cache with pre-fetching. This increased lower level cache means that the cache miss rate, which slow down operations are reduced and the cache hit rate is increased. ELI5: IPC is increased over Skylake-S Anandtech predicts around 11-18% IPC increase. This is more than a recent generational leap, Broadwell --> Skylake was ~3% gain, Skylake --> Kabylake was 0% gain. Other stuff AVX-512 instructions supported. Turbo boost 3.0 supported. Anandtech predicts we'll see all products from both sides by the end of the summer. Overclocking-ness Unfortunately it looks like Intel has gone for TIM rather than solder for the IHS. Heavy stuff before 9am here in the UK, probably missed a ton or misinterpreted some stuff, let me know and I'll update it
  15. AMD's Ryzen to combat Intel X299 enthusiast platform has been leaked. Codename Whitehaven, 2 of those es samples cpus has been leaked and both of them comes with 16 cores and 32 threads, with a clock speed of 3.1ghz and boost of 3.6ghz. Their device id are, . It's also mentioned, they might use a new socket, socket SP3 and will have support for quad channel ddr4. http://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-16-12-core-x399-whitehaven-cpus-leaked/ https://videocardz.com/newz/amd-engineering-samples-update
  16. Intel's successor to Haswell-E and Broadwell-E, has been revealed, showing both KabyLake X and Skylake X being the replacements for the current X99 platform. Both KabyLake X and SkyLake X will use socket 2066, on the new Intel X299 chipset. KabyLake X tops out at quad core with hyper threading, 16 gen 3 pcie lanes, and has a TDP of 112w. SkyLake X goes up to 10 cores with hyper thread, 48 gen 3 pcie lanes, and a TDP of 140w. KabyLake X is not KabyLake, that's due out soon for socket 1151. http://wccftech.com/intel-x299-chipset-skylake-x-kaby-lake-x/ Update

  19. Seems right now we can't have the best of both worlds? EG Fast clock in 4Ghz+ range, and many cores with many PCIE lanes... without heavy overclocking. At first I wanted to do a 8700k build but after discovering the PCIE lane limitations that spec has.,. even with an expensive chipset to add more capability.... I feel the 8700k isn't going to work best for me and here's why Here's my build without a CPU or mobo pending your help. Thank you for your help.
  20. This is my first post, but was wondering what people's thoughts on this were. For years I've been building HEDT (high end desktops) for music / art related reasons. These days, I'm primarily using Photoshop for comic work with 200+ layers at 3000-4000px. As Photoshop users know, it's not very dependent on the GPU and loves CPU and RAM much more. I'm considering a new main core build with lots of CPU cores and tons of ram. My current core build right now from 2015 is 5820K 6-core OC'd to 4.2ghz w/ Noctua NH-D15S Chromax 32GB Ripjaw G.Skill DDR4 2400mhz ASUS X99 PRO 3.1 mobo EVGA GTX 1070 SC Thunderbolt 3 EX card Samsung 960 Pro M.2 512GB (and lots more SSD's and HDD's) Seasonic X650 PSU Fractal Design R6 White My main question, though I suppose it's hypothetical is if the new Ryzen processors for 2019 will not only be high core, but supply enough PCI-E lanes for my other components like the M.2 SSD and Thunderbolt 3 card. I know Linus had a video on HEDT machines becoming less relevant these days, but there are still reasons to build and use them. If building on mainstream platforms would still be a massive upgrade, it would be great to save the money rather than keeping the insane high-end prices of HEDT's going (especially Intel omg). Does anyone know if AMD is allowing more lanes in their mainstream Ryzen 2nd gens this year? I think the current limit is 16 lanes, while I currently can use 28 in my own rig (because it's a 5820K, not the 5930K). 44 lanes are on high end Intel chips, while I believe Threadripper allows 64 lanes. How much does this matter with my equipment? I don't want any bottlenecks if I can avoid it. My current rig already feels the chug quite a bit on a 6-core oc'd chip, so CPU will be vitally important. Thoughts?
  21. So I have decided that I'm going to drive up to Vancouver for LTX 2019 and my girlfriend decided that she would like to join me. This means that I am going to have to buy her the byoc lan pass so that she can sit next to me during that time. The problem arises at the point where she doesn't want a computer for herself for gaming since she lives in a dorm at her college. Initially I was going to take my current mitx ryzen system and put it in the same case as another computer like in a Phanteks enthoo mini xl ds. This case is pretty big though which would make using it as a lan computer pretty difficult. I then had the thought that I could do something like what Linus did in 2 gamers 1 cpu. My initial plan was to buy a threadripper chip with either 12 or 16 cores and have two 6 or 8 core gaming systems for her and myself during lans. However intel also has hedt processors that are still better for things like gaming but they are so much more expensive for a comparable core count that I don't know if I can justify that cost. Also with ryzen 3 there are supposed to be higher core count cpu's on the am4 platform but I don't know if that will be as good as using a proper hedt platform or if it will be out in time for LTX 2019. So I guess my question is should I get threadripper, wait for ryzen 3, or save up more for intel's hedt platform and why? (also of note is that all platforms support matx which is the size I plan on using)
  22. If you're looking for the most extreme CPU available, Intel's overclockable 28-core, 56-thread Xeon W-3175X is the chip for you (provided you can come up with $3,000, plus the cost of an expensive platform). In comparison, AMD's massive Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is downright affordable at $1,800. Xeon W-3175X doesn't even match the core count of AMD's flagship. But Intel thinks its Skylake-SP silicon can beat AMD's finest in every type of workload, particularly the heavily-threaded tasks such a CPU was designed for. Think architectural and industrial design, or professional content creation. 24. Hey everyone, I am looking for everyone’s opinions and maybe some advice on my new build. I am looking to build what is essentially my dream PC. I will be using it for 4K gaming, some video editing I do for friends, as well as handling some security testing of large databases and encryption testing. My budget is in the 5000 to 7500 range. I have a few part I scored at some local wicked sales. The parts I currently have are four WD Black 6TB drives, a 500GB WD Black NVMe drive I am going to use for the boot/OS drive ( will likely dual boot a variation of Linux as well as Windows 10) as well as 32GB of Dominator Platinum RGB 3200 ram. I know I may need more RAM and can sell this kit easily if need be. I am open to both the Threadripper 3 platform and the new Cascade Lake chips as well. I am looking at the HEDT platforms for the expanded PCI lanes as I am looking to do PCI storage for a 2TB gaming drive and a 2TB scratch/storage drive. I will be going NVIDIA for the GPU. So beyond what I have mentioned above I am looking for all opinions on what I should go with and your guys opinions on your stability/issues with the previous versions of these platforms!! Thanks for all your help!
  25. Hi All So after I had some issues with my laptop which turned out to be a terrible BIOS update from Alienware, I decided to buy an Alienware Graphics Amplifier to just circumvent the issue as my OG 2080 arrived from my old country. To be honest I'm actually really happy with the setup for now, even if my problem with the laptop isn't solved and is what I'm stuck with for a few months before sorting a new build. For context, I have a 1080p 240hz display and am getting 250-300 FPS in Overwatch with mid-high settings. I even managed to recycle and cut up the AGA so its using my old 1200W PSU (which will go into the new build) and a Noctua NF-B9 Redux to make it a lot quieter. One thing that I observed is that only gaming related programs, typically battle net, actual games and Tobii are actually running off the external GPU, everything else is running off my internal one which whilst crap right now, runs non-gaming applications perfectly fine. I looked online and saw that Windows has an option to set specific applications to use a specific GPU which got me a bit curious. I bought my 2080 back when people weren't really reporting that SLI/Crossfire was dead and to be honest it was my ignorance not checking this as I had been effectively using Crossfire for years beforehand. I originally expected to just get another and have amazing performance for less than a 2080ti. Now I'm thinking that if I wait for the next line of Nvidia cards for my actual build, I could use my 2080 as the main card for the system and a 2180ti or w/e it will be called as the main gaming GPU as it would seem like that would actually yield the best performance. Considering that the 2080 would be more than enough for the everyday system tasks and forking out for 2 new top end cards and likely watercooling isn't in my best interest, I wondered if anybody else is doing this. I don't want or need SLI as none of the games I play actually enable it, I feel like if this works then I can save some money, doing so hopefully wouldn't look too bad if the waterblocks are roughly the same dimensions and if not, thery could be vertically mounted (Thermaltake Core etc) but I just don't see any Youtube channels doing this. Loads of single GPU or SLI configs but nobody doing the above with 1 lower tier GPU. Does anybody have experience of doing this, know of posts/videos of people doing it etc? Not sure if the keywords I searched with in Google/Youtube are that great as searching for "discreet gaming only GPU" etc etc just brings up videos on internal vs discreet graphics. If any mods see this, maybe a good video opportunity to look into!
